Shall we give a prize to the 50,000th poster!?
Well I've got a 1 in 10 chance (about a 10th of all posts are mine)... so I say yes...
If there is to be a prize then it had better be unannounced else there will be a posting war to hit the target!
Anyway, moderators would have to be exempt, sorry Rich!
Now then, what would the prize be? I know, how about a year's storage, server and traffic bill for all that waffle? Perhaps not!
I was thinking more of a bit of home-made bling....
And yes, secret of course.
A good idea , althoogh home made bling may not appeal to all sides , it's only Germans who seem to crave baubles .
Free membership for a year , free game sometime ?
A 'virtual' prize would be just as easy - after all, it could be someone from abroad / non-airsofter etc.
Award 'em a special status with an exclusive 50,000 post rank & avatar flash!
Perhaps an extra sig strip....that means if you win CW half of my screen will be blotted out
How are you going to tell who the 50,000 poster is?
Hmm, that's a point!
Don't want to do it the way shops do it - approximate footfall and choose a a young presentable woman with kid in tow 'cos it will make a good photo
I can probably work it out with a database query... but I'll need access to the db... which I notice you've moved!
Thinking about it the 'choose a a young presentable woman' concept is in reality the better option.
Keep a eye on the post counts, choose between ourselves a poster in that period - excluding mods, undesirables, waifs and strays.
After all, it only has PR value to us and a bit of a surprise to the recipient. It's a bit of fun after all!
As an aside...
I thought today its all very well asking people to make sigs conform to 'forum size' but it becomes a little silly, ney ludicrous when you can have any number of appropriate size ones .
Take for example anyone with three or even four 'sigs files' and they become larger than webbys which we alls= said was too big...
Perhaps 'userbars' for groups might be more appropriate as it stands if i play for KGss, PBI, Landser, FJ, Doughboys, am in the CIA drinking club and in a re-enactment group my legitimate sig files take up half the page.
fair point?
"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
'User bars' is an idea that had crossed my mind too but the reason why I asked for conformity wasn't to remove large sig banners as such but more to do with setting up an integrated banner system that requires a standard format (top right of the page).
However, a neat forum is a bonus too!
Weirdly, v3 of the forum software doesn't have the 'sigs on first post of the page only' option, as this would have tidied things up a bit too.
So, I'll have a bit more thinking about user bars....
Thats cos that wasn't an option... it was a mod I made to the code... I can probably do it to the new version as well.
Point in hand is that about 60 per cent of this thread so far is extensive sig files
We'll have threads running to 10+ pages that might have been on three
Dave for example your files nearly always outsize your posts now. I(t just seems a littl eunwieldly to me,
Is there not an option to have one sig file that 'rotates' like the one at the top of the page?
"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
Not quite true Gadge - take a look at Yith's one line post which contains two lines of banners.
Even if you removed them the post would be the same depth as it is dictated by the 'Author' column depth, so it's just a perception thing.
Also, the number of posts on a page is dictated by a fixed number of posts I specify, not the physical size of contents.
Sig banners could 'rotate' by making them animated gifs - but that would have to be done per user as would any complex coding such as the ad banner system.

Actually it could probably be done with some clever javascript coding... but wouldn't be that simple.
Aye, sledgehammer to crack a nut!
Actually I don't think I like the idea of banners moving, it more be more distracting and therefore defeat the object!
(Meh, v3 allow the use of Flash in content now - no, naughty CW, evil thoughts!)
I'd go for sig files for upcoming games and user bars for groups personally.
"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
That's 'cos you don't do all the design work
As I've explained, it makes no odds having a stack of two standard sig banners over having no banners done in the manner of Rich's and mine. Headshot's 'super stack' is a different kettle of fish and I'm minded to alter that if he doesn't do it first!
