Would those sort of limits be commonly acceptable in NZ? Obviously, in the UK they wouldn't be, for an AEG. Some sites (and not that many) accept 450 but only if the gun is physically fixed on single shot (and can't be made full auto).

Blimey 450 plus! Is this the fabled antiaircraft version of the sten? Surely 350 is enough - mines fine at that.

To get it past 400 fps will be difficult. First, you'll need to change the plastic bushings to metal ones (6mm). Then install a spring guide with bearings. If you want to keep the barrel short, you'll have to put in a really tough spring (i'd say an M140 up) with accompanying torque up gears and a new hi torque motor. Or you could use a longer barrel and install a PDI190 or M130 spring. But things you have to remember: the sten uses a Ver7 gearbox. This china gearbox can take only up to a PDI 190 and M130 max safely. Any stiffer and there is a very high probability that your gearbox will crack. Another is the extremely limited battery space. You'll need a powerful battery to crank the powerful springs..the sten just doesn't have the space. And lastly, it's a Sten!!!

I've got mine up to 350-370 fps with the stock spring. I just installed a spring guide w bearings, changed the bushings, changed the cylinder to a type2 (MP5) and sealed all possible airleaks. I fixed the non-responsive hop too.

Club rules vary, but the site hosting the WW2 airsoft events allows 450 fps with 10m M.E.D. Since full auto is illegal here [   ] the extra power helps make sure your shots are gonna cut it when fighting in dense bush. Both my guns are stock, and I can tell the difference with my Cyma Thompson and my AGM MP40. The Cyma shoots just under 400 and does a lot better at cutting through the undergrowth than the MP40, which shoots about 330 (though on open ground, the MP40 is much more accurate).
Open days here = lots of G36s and M4s running at around 450.

@bugman - you have to mod the hop a little to get it working properly. Here's the tutorial:
