got my tanaka g33/40 (short kar98) on the way. Want to know, how do i get the most out of this gun? i am pretty familiar with gas gear so i know all the maintence bits. Do they have anything i need to watch out for?

Secondly, what upgrades (if any) work well in these guns? especially things like tightbores, hop rubbers

See Sgt.Heide's thread about the BGS Hop unit, they are the ones to go for.

It's the only upgrade I've gone for. I know a few folks here have fitted tighbore barrels, but I'm happy with the consistancy I get now after the BGS was fitted.

What's ur woodstock like? Original 'yellow' stain, most here strip 'em down are redo the finish.

too me that looks alright.

but with mine, i got ALOT of gas residue in the barrel, so be sure to give it a clean out after every skirmish to keep it going nice, like what JD7 said, BSG hop unit is the way too go, :good:

Now a 'namsofter. I have an M72 L.A.W. for sale for 110 posted, PM if interested.

Ah the work of art that is the tanaka Kar98. regular maintance is the key. spend some cash on the BSG hopup and you have a truely fine bit of kit. make sure you keep the mags gassed and when filling them, give em a good shake. the stock is a bit yellow, mine is aging down nicely and becoming darker. clear the barrel after each game and your there. and final tip don't be on the recieving end of one. :giggle:

I always cleaned the barrel as often as possible, not just during a game! When you get home from a skirmish, pull the barrel through, using some silicone oil on the cloth. Before your next skirmish, pull it through with a clean, dry cloth to remove the silicone residue. Put some silicone on your seals between skirmishes as well, to ensure they maintain their gas tight qualities.

Also (and this may sound petty!), check your ammo for dirt, moulding lines, deformities, etc. A lot of ammo has mould release on it, even though you can't see it and it needs cleaning off before you'll get consistency. If you don't use clean ammo, you'll not get good shot to shot consistency, lose accuracy and the barrel will bung up with crud.

Tightbores are a bit of a waste of money (if you can find one!). The BGS hop set however, is definitely worth fitting.

Thanks for the replies gents

I was intending to clean it often, Im using a WE gbb SCAR for my modern loadout so i know the amount of maintence needed by gas guns :?

yeah I read your thread about the BGS hopup sgt heide, do you know where I could source one? and realistically, how easy are they to fit? You say its not worth fitting a tightbore to it aswell? (money saved there lol)

Cheers

I order the BGS from time to time, when I have enough interest (usually, 5 orders), on this thread viewtopic.php?f=115&t=8071

Fitting is relatively straightforward if you're competent at weapon disassembly. I did a pictorial "how to" on this thread - viewtopic.php?f=45&t=4911&hilit=fitted

yeah that should be ok, i had a quick look through your tutorial and that seems fine!

if you could register my interest so to speak, when you decide to order some hop's if you could let me know that would be great

Cheers

Also, what gas are these capable of taking? obviously i know it will affect the fps, but i want to know, if i run propane through it, is it going to do any damage? what does everyone else use?

Cheers

Depending on the ambient temperature I use 134a thru to propane. The hotter the day, the less powerfull the gas.

I think that using anything other than 134a is nuts. Mine chrono'd at 518 using green gas on a cold morning (about 8 degrees) and that was with everything being left in a van overnight. Start to put mags in pockets or tunics and they'll start to heat up - then you've got all sorts of trouble.

right ok , yeah i had a sneaking suspicion that that was the case! Think i will save green for all but the coldest of mornings

Cheers
