After seeing some splendid examples of the Kar98k at Crete, I'm now in the position where I'd like to buy one. Obviously I'm aware of the various types, be it Tanaka, G&G or a spring conversion. I'm slanted towards the G&G, reading through the previous threads, this appears to be the one for me!

I ask any owners of Kar98s to give me their opinion on their model, and whether the G&G be a worthy purchase.

Cheers!

Tanaka K98, accept no substitutes.

I don't get on with gas guns, they just don't like me. Plus there is a special pride if you have done a springer conversion yourself when firing it, especially at that first kill you get with it!
Think you will get three distinct viewpoints asking this question and it might leave you still no the wiser :giggle:

I've made and owned several spring K98's and, none of them, nor any of the other spring K98's I've ever seen, can hold a candle to a well set up (and well aimed!) Tanaka. The G&G ones I've seen and handled have all been shite in one way or another. There's a reason why the Tanaka is so expensive and, this debate has happened several times in the past.

But, I concur with Bigkie, in that opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one.

Depends if you are going to use a rifle every time (including open days) and fire 10k shots a year then thingss like spares come into mind...

Having built myself a Garand using a real stock it is true that the enjoyment you get from using it is magnified! So if you do build your own VSR style one you will have unlimited spares and upgrades to choose from.

Tanaka's are the best for looks and perform well and I only know of a couple that have had problems (airsoft armouries had one on display a few years back saying dead parrot) and I think Porta had problems with his recently. (dont know if he has fixed it) Mags are expensive and it is gas if that puts you off.

A note on the G&G one is that it has 2 types of mags, one being CO2. If you plan to go to open days you might want to check with your local sites as a few I have been too ban C02 powered guns. ( I have no knowledge of sites and insurances used for WW2 games) If you also want a G&G one make sure you get one with the upgraded bolt (it was a free part G&G offered) as the first ones had problems.

if i was on the fence right now i might stay put till the first real review's of the tanaka springer come out, though they are in a price range of their own .i might go for the red fire tanaka clone or a g+g for the money i have.

armoury
m1a1 Thompson,sten mk2,mp40,stg44,sterling,mk2 bren gun,lee Enfield no4 mk1,Mauser Kar98, Walther ppk,smith and Weston m10 and Mauser m712
Give me a big enough hammer and a place to stand and I could fix the world.
i'll kill a man in a fair fight or if i think he's going to start a fair fight or over a woman or.......

I have all three and used all three extensively: An upgraded Bar98k scratchbuild, a Tanaka Kar98k, and the G&G G980.

The upgraded (EdGi barrel, steel internals) Bar98k shoots the most reliably and accurately and has the best consistency but will never look 100% accurate to the real steel.

The Tanaka shoots great with the BestGun hop up. Has some fps fluctuations affecting consistency. Otherwise very reliable if not as accurate as the other 2. Looks the BEST.

The G&G was cr@p out of the box. Had a LOT of headaches. But surprisingly, once those headaches are fixed, it shoots better than my Tanaka. Probably because of the more temperature stable CO2 giving it more consistency.

So it depends on what you want most out of your k98.
Looks, reliability, plus cool factor: Tanaka
Performance, skirmishability, build satisfaction, accuracy: upgraded Bar10/VSR conversion
Budget, Good performance (once you fix the niggles): G&G

Thanks for all the replies chaps, much appreciated. I think I'll mull it over for a few months, and decide on what I truly want to use it for and what I want to get out of it, performance, skirmish-able etc :good:
