right, today more progress,
the carrage is all but done, it just needs the steel sheild fitting and painting

the maxim is now assembled and working.
its still basic, the body of the gun is built, and the aeg is fitted and fires well using the new trigger system

it still nees a front end cap on the barrel jacket, wooden grip handles fitting, detail welding (cocking leaver, sights, and general gubbins, the pin mounts welding on, and various bits of shite)

the gun is solid steel, the reciver is welded to a 2 inch tube (in the trade a cut down acro prop, these hold up walls) this gives an "inner barrel" to mount the water jacket to, the gun is rock solid, i could easily stand on it with each end on a chair and it wouldnt snap or bend.
it also weighs a lot. the outer barrel jacket is pvc pipe, but the gap between the two is getting filled in with ballast tomorrow.

here some pics, metal has been primered, and barrel jacket needs primer too, lots to do still, but progress is cracking on :good:

see the inner barrel in the last picture

more work tommorrow hopefully :D

Looking good! Seems we have a designated "motivational tool" for future Russian themed battles!

We need no motivation! let old Porta sit proudly in the face of the Gitlerits and gun them down mercilessly.

For such a sight I will charge with glee. :D

Great Idea and lovely work, about the only gun topic I watch with interest. :good:

oh i forgot, i also ordered parts for the tracer system,(not permantly on, but can be used changed within 5 seconds) so if its used in the dark or more likely low light, it will have tracer (a must for mgs in my opionion) :D

I'm impressed bruv. Where did you get that drainpipe

Only wish I could've been more help with the body metalwork, but that sized 'box section' isnt generally chucked away by the masses of longsight!

Dunno if an M249 box mag will fit into the M4 donor, but ive got a couple of minimi's you can try out if you want.

Its certainly looking good, and I will be OH SO UNBELIEVABLY happy to see you lugging summet real steel about instead of me always puttin me back out on the bloody '42. I really cant wait for the "'ere Tiny...... you wanna 'ave a go wi' this big basterd?" "Erm......no thanks porta, i'll stick to me bit of brown twig shaped like a PPSH"

My Two Cents.....

sorry i didnt get time to update last night, a lot of work done on friday.

but last night i was doing the fireworks for the kids. my little girl loved daddys fireworks dance, i didnt have the heart to tell her it was because my arm was on fire :slap:

anyways the gun and carrage are done, apart from detail welding and the grips, also the front end of the gun needs finishing and the whole thing needs painting the correct colour
the armoured shield just wasnt up to the job the 3mm steel was too floppy, so a trip to the steel mill , and i got some 6mm steel plate, (they had 10mm, but im not trying to stop real rounds right?)
its a bastard to cut, and a even bigger bastard to cut curves in
-- attachment is not available --
-- attachment is not available --

so this will be finished cutting monday morning, then claen up of rust , primered and welded on to the chassis by end of play monday

the boss gets back monday night, so painting and detail work will be done at home , but the gun and mount both work perfect, the tracer unit works a treat,(video didnt pick it up or id show you) and when the shields on, ill try and do a quick video for you all (but it will still be in red primer.

heres the gun and carrage, (still with work to do)
-- attachment is not available --

like ive said , not a 100% copy, but a reasonable looks like at a distance. :D

That looks amazing! It must weigh a LOT!.
I wish i had some metal working skills (and equipment) too. Unfortunately for me, the one time i tried hacking into metal, the heavy work involved had an adverse effect on my fine motor skills when i did my eye surgeries until weeks after. So i leave it to the professionals.

Looks nice Porta.

Spiers & I are trying to get that site by us again and I have a spot you will love to defend, a nice area 40ft above the enemy but for the scenario you will have to be German not Russian :D

excellent work really original, ive just got this image i cant shake of you tuning up at a walk on day with a mini digger , 200 sand bags and a maxim to set yourself up in trench for the day  :good:

armoury
m1a1 Thompson,sten mk2,mp40,stg44,sterling,mk2 bren gun,lee Enfield no4 mk1,Mauser Kar98, Walther ppk,smith and Weston m10 and Mauser m712
Give me a big enough hammer and a place to stand and I could fix the world.

this is fully working and painted now.
i need to put pictures up :slap:

and a MAJOR mistake, i welded the feed tray on WITHOUT looking at a picture, and i put it on the left side  in real life it feeds from the right :slap:

i have managed to make a ribbed barrel jacket, the smooth one looked just too smooth allong with all the other obvious flaws.

i still need to put on an ammo belt and ammo box, plus sort some sights out (though not really critical for its use anyway)

i have a tripod (well 4 legged pod ... quadpod?) so without the shield and carrage i can use it as a vickers or mg 08/15 if i play as brit or german

its basicly fed from m16 type magazines, ive got a 300rd high cap, with 250 rounds in it its the same ammo count as a real one. before reload. im going to try and get some 100 rd midcaps so as not to wind it when with a 1 man crew , (a no2 gunner could wind the highcap mag)

changing mags takes about 10 to 15 seconds (its fiddley to get a finger through the hole in the side of the reciver to press the m4 mag relase button) so a nice pause for any attackers to storm the mg.

it can fire tracer rounds as well for low light

my only dislike is it fires too fast, its doing about 800 to 1000 rpm (even on a small battery, the m4 donor gun was souped up with high speed gears :( ) which is double the real rate of fire, but i cant change that without risking buggering it up. short bursts i fancy, or a lot of reloading

im taking it allong to the gunman game in febuary for some feild trials and to get it a propper in game test.

ill post some pics as soon as i get chance, (i need a day at home with the wifey out)

thanks for all the interest guys :good:

You can by very small 12V rated "drill speed control" kits from Maplin ('Como Drills' manufacturer) that you can use to lower the RoF, without dropping the available current/ability to pull the spring*

*(It's what I have in my Vickers to reduce the speed of the notoriously fast Ver.1 FA-MAS gearbox inside!)

I've had a look on the Maplin website, but they don't seen to do the higher current version anymore :?
It's like this one, but slightly different in design (this one is only 5A peak current)

Yeah, they're the same as the ones Maplin now sell, which unfortunately aren't 'man' enough current-handling wise.
