I'm going to help my mate tomorrow (Sat) morning as he's been given the work keys and we're allowed to get on with it. I'll be shaving the stock to size and we'll do some work on the cosmetics etc. I was searching yahoo pics and noticed the rear sight is the same (looking) as the K98. Aha thinks I, I've got a Dboys wall hanger, I'll nick the sight off that. Upon closer inspection, it's not as easy as I thought, it appears to be cast into part of the outer barrel. Does anybody have any suggestions of where I might source a rear sight or was that built into the gun?
Please bear in mind I've not ever seen a real Mg42, all my research is from internet pics. I certainly dont have a de ac we can look at and take measurements from ![]()

The blade of the sight flips down and is held under the pressure of a spring. Unfortunately, a K98 sight blade looks nothing like an MG42 one. You CAN get complete sight assemblies from Marstar in Canada. Hope this helps you.

Big help, thank you very much

I've still got the mock up rear sight that my original zib replica came with somewhere if you get really desperate (it's better than nothing, just!). If you get stuck and really need it, it's yours. If you need any other pictures, I still have some of my MG42 build.

Just the one for the moment to show progress. We've mounted the magazine and copied the real clips so it can attatch and detatch the same as a real one. We cut the remaining vent holes in the barrel shroud and we've managed to make a reciever on the base so that it clips onto the anti aircraft tripod that I've got for it. For the observant amongst you, yes the stock is held on with gaffer tape for this picture, I'll be thinning it down to fit the body very soon and then it will be solid. After that it'll all go back to be blacked.
Sgt Heide I'll take you up on that offer of the old rear sight if I may, and after the front sight as well, if you know of any. Please PM me and let me know how much you want for bits and postage. Once the beastie is up and running I'll improve the cosmetic bits and bobs, as and when I have funds and find the bits.

I don't want anything for it (glad to see it gone and to someone who needs it more than I do). Just pm me your address and I'll post it off to you. Marstar is the best bet for your real steel sights (and many other parts), or, if you're really patient, they do come up on ebay from time to time as well.
By the way, your '42 is coming along nicely!

Uh Oh, I can feel the pain train coming at the Bloody Gulch! hehe

Lol, I'm not being that optimistic. I've drilled the stock and rebated it so that it will fit tight into the body. On Saturday We'll weld a steel plate in the end of the body and drill a hole in the center. I'm going to set threaded bar into the drilled stock with Araldite and then will be able to bolt the stock to the body nice and strong.
As for when it'll be ready? Who knows, Gultch would be nice, we'll just have to wait and see ![]()
Edit: Stock now fitted to the body and we blacked the gun by heating it up with a gas axe and then painting on the oil, Its worked a treat. Will post up some pics tomorrow after it's been up to the woods. Hopefully Tom Andrews will now take it over and work his magic on the internals

Just a couple of pics to show progress. First one shows the MG blacked and on the anti aircraft tripod, second is yours truely, looking slovenly (pocket and top button undone
) The gun has now gone on holiday to stay with Tom. I think he changed his mind three times today about which gearbox he's going to put in!

your project is progressing well
Nice work Jimbo / Tom - keep going!

You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
Still no news of the works on the internals yet, but I'm going to need a bipod if I want to get mobile in the game. Can anyone point me in the direction of the cheapest place to buy one and could you also show me how the bipod fixes to the weapon please? We managed to fabricate a mount so that the AA tripod that I've got works properly, but I cant find pics of how the bipod fits on the front end.

Looks to me like it has a spring-loaded latch that holds it into the furthest forward of the slots under the barrel.

Kinda hard to explain but the bottom of the receiver is shaped to make two kind of outer loops and an inner curved section which the round bar on the top of the bipod clips into. The Bipod fitting is almost exactly the same as on your AA tripod so if you make a fitting for that, the bipod will fit it too!
these pics may help.

We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."

These don't look to badly priced http://www.zib-militaria.de/epages/6143 ... 009&Page=3
I've got a bipod for my MG42 project, I'll try and dig it out and post some pictures tonight

Thanks for all the replys gents, the one from Zib militaria looks to be a fair price. I dont think we can copy that, and the more real bits I can bolt on the project, the better it will look, subject to budget of course ![]()

good morning,
I wonder if I can help with some questions that starting to work on this project as I like you have a plan or diagram that can tell me the extent of opening that is right where the barrel is removed in the real. and another thing I will buy steel from 60mm square then leave it on the side where the openings begin to 50mm. Also I send to make a modified m4 hop up to make this replica dissamble identical to real gun from the side and use a m4 gearbox SR25 can be long or 249 for not having such a problem that costs a bit unclear but for me the ideal would be to use a gearbox to see II and it cost me a little cheaper to leave it near 600FPS I think I would help to motivate me to walk with a replica so heavy.
odball put a diagram on the carcass which is not clear to me what is the body and lid of the drawer mechanism and measures of the tile as the lever that helps to change the barrel of the original would be ideal if you have any diagrams or pictures something more relevant to take measures if not too much trouble as these little things makes my job less professional and very discouraged because I want you to be as similar to real dissamble including.
