I just started a new project. This time it is the MG34. Like with all my previous mg-s the inspiration for this project came from projects of members from this forum that made some great replicas and I can only hope mine will look as good as theirs.
Now like always first step was to make a 1:1 scale drawing.

Next part was making some cardboard templates.

Now as I haven't bought the sheath metal and pipes that I need for this project jet I started with what I had left from my kar projects. First I shaped a piece of scrap beech into a simple template to be later used for bending the metal.
Then I started on the wooden stock. As this piece of scrap beech was quite hard and thick I couldn't cut it with my band saw that is currently having some troubles, so I picked up the best saw I have. Any guess what that saw is?
If you guessed a Husqvarna chain saw you are right. I cut the rough shape of the stock and decided that that was enough airsoft work for one day.

If nothing comes in the way I will put my rasp to work on the stock tomorrow.
To be continued...

It is about the right time for an update. I got the material I needed(2 square meters of 2mm thick steel sheet and couple of pipes the right size) a couple days ago so I was able to start the work.
Yesterday I spent drilling the holes in the barrel and it was not fun I can tell you that. Now whit the holes drilled I made some small parts that fit the barrel shroud and that was that for the day.
Now today I started to work on the receiver and top cover. For the receiver I cut a nice piece of steel plate to the right shape.
Next I cut some lines in the plate to help me bend it. After I was done cutting I bended the plate with help of a hammer and a piece of wood shaped the right shape. The top cover piece was made the same way.

So this is the result after a couple of days work(the stock was shaped before I got the metal).

There is still a long way to go but I am quite happy with the progress so far.

Looks great, it's really coming together. Well done.

Thanks. Since my last post I worked on some smaller bits and pieces and the grip. I don't have any picture right now but you can expect some new ones during the weekend when I also plan to do some welding. Unfortunately I ran out of cutting discs so I am forced to take a (hopefully)short brake.
Now there is a thing I could use some help with. I am planning to put a standard CYMA v3 drop in gearbox in this mg but i don't know what is the longest inner barrel I can use whit it. I used the 600mm in 2 other projects I made and the barrel was too long for the air available from the gearbox. I really don't want to have that problem again so would really like a suggestion what type of barrel to use. Thanks.

I think I used a 500mm barrel in my bren and that works well ,you can get big bore cylinders and piston heads but I don't think they help that match to increase volume ,in any case 500mm is going to give all the accuracy you need in a support weapon ,maybe too much accuracy ,after all its a wide cone of fire you want from an mg not a sniper rifle at all.

Thanks. Well I used that long 600 or was it 650mm barrel in my mg42 and I lost a lot of range because of the air a barrel like that needs and I did not want to make the same mistake again. As for the accuracy I don't need an accurate mg or any full auto gun for that matter. I like to use as long barrel as possible so it ends as close to the muzzle as possible so I am sure that nothing can deflect the bb. Now the 500mm will come quite close to perfection and some nice spacers will make sure that bb doesn't hit anything when it travels trough the last part of the outer barrel.

It is time for another update. This weekend I managed to weld everything I had ready together so now this thing looks like an mg34. I also mounted the stock and managed to cut and prepare some parts for mounting the top cover.

The to do list is still pretty big but it is getting smaller every day.
This week I plan on making the top cover latch and some details for the cover, mounting the top cover, welding the sides of the grip on and welding the sides of the part that rotates on the real steel for barrel change. After this I will take a short brake(finally going to the seaside) and when I return from it I will start work on the sights and drum mag mount. As for the bipod I haven't decided yet but I may just buy an m53 bipod and fit it on the gun.

So i have finished the mg a long time ago and today i finaly managed to take a couple of pictures of it finished. So here they are.

That looks great! Well done!
You are using a version 3 gearbox, can you tell me what hop unit you are using please?
Could you also show details of the converted drum mag? Very interested in how you did this.

10 kg ,your going to feel that at the end of the day !

It is heavy and I love it that way. I mean it is an mg.
Now to answer your questions Lord Elpus:
I used the standard ak hop unit as for the drum you will need mg34/42 m53 drum an ak drum mag if possible A.C.M. as it has all the parts you will need, then you will need some cardboard or plastic and hot glue gun. When you have all the parts it is just about mounting the ak drum mechanism into mg drum. Now if you get yugo drum like I have you will have to paint it for proper look but I just love our SMB color so for me it stays the way it is. I hope this helps you. Here are some pictures for easier understanding

Very good, well thought out, I hope the cardboard stands up to the rigour of battle!

Hello nice build, its a real beast, just like the real thing.
Is that a real bipod?
Are those drum mags available cheap in your part of the world.?
And is that flexible bb feed tube a re -cycled airsoft part,or is it from a specialised tube supplier,as i had a quick look for something similar and could not find anything exactly the same.

Hi
thanks.
Bipod is a yugo m53 bipod and the same goes for the drum mag that costs around 15 €. The tube is a part of the ak drum mag that i used.
