Just a thought and what do you all think? Mortars....eg British light 2" mortar for example, use a moscart 40mm GL as basis and then use PVC tubing to scale....add appropriate canvas webbing etc and there you are...Bloke in States has used a coupler- 40mm wide one end, 60mm on tother, shell is loaded with gas and then fits into coupler, ammo such as nerf vortex howler is loaded into one end of uPVC pipe, the pipe is then slid onto the coupler and the thing is then fired by pushing the button on the back of the grenade shell. The chap says he has hit a 20ft area at 250ft and they use a 10ft kill radius....says bbs can also be fired from it and can also be used a la RPG stylie....
That sounds cracking. I hope oddball is also taking note, one of these on his tank would kick arse (or, for that matter, use as an anti-tank weapon)!

Any links Andy?
Apparently you can pressure a Madbull 40mm up to 400psi with CO2.

The Vortex Nerf ball - howler
Special finger grip zones help this Vortex Nerf ball spin faster for tighter spirals and greater accuracy. Aerodynamic design allows throws up to and over 90 metres. 3 Seperate whistles combine when thrown to create a howling effect. the ball is fairly heavy and hard and really goes for it.Loads of fun.
Length: 32cm

The pocket Nerf ball - howler
This mini nerf ball whistles when thrown hard and flies really well. Unlike its bigger brother, this Vortex Nerf ball is much softer and lighter, perfect for kids. These balls will entertain even the most demanding kids with the missile style noise produced.
Length: 17cm (6 ¾ ")
Will look about for cheaper ones maybe eBay.
Nice sound http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2TENUukhvRI

Free speech is expensive these days!

There was a guy on ebay.com who was building 2" mortars, bazookas and rocket launchers using moscart 40mm cartridges mostly made from plastic pipes.

For the mortar he constructed a 'shell' using a cartridge a tube and a nerf rocket and it was fired by dropping it into the mortar tube onto a firing pin.

I did contact him but he wasn't shipping abroad and currently he's not got anything for sale on ebay.

Well I lent Major a deac 2" mortar to take measurements and photos of. Hopefully he'll be making me a replica over the winter ready for use with my Chindit group.
If he does then it will likely be able to take moscarts and be usable for airsofting...
Major, I think the idea in the pics that Pete's posted is great, i.e. the cardboard tubes and nerfs... Though I'll want a more accurate mortar! Thats not much like a real one!
So it's the mini nerf like the red one above that will fit in a 2" pipe then?
Here is a 203 with one the sound is good.

So we just call a kill if it lands withi 15 feet then?
I suppose the whistle wil mean you still know it s there even if you cant see it land
going to require a bit more honestly than grenade IMHO but a great idea.

Oddball,
I've done some "measurements" using the image for a guide and doing some rotation/resizing in PSP and I think it may be just over 2" in diameter... I can't be 100% sure though... it may be spot on or just under.
Certainly its pretty close!
CAW do a mortar, ZeroOne have them in stock;

CAW Model 89 Infantry Mortar for 40mm Shell

Thats Japanese...
What the Americans incorrectly call a "Knee Mortar"
I have the rear end of my 2" pie reduced to 40mm for the shell but could cut it off and have 40 shell pushed in after nerf rocket.
In terms of hitting you it's a kill just using distance with a bb grenade even if the bb's miss you.
So sound cheapish to me.

i was wondering if there was any way of doing a mortar along similar lines to a grenade, but with no explosive involved, obviously.
Basically, just something like a (biodegradable!) ping pong ball that splits open on impact, with bb's and a dash of talc inside, you'd get a puff of smoke and some peas flying around, but not enough weight to hurt if you got a direct hit off it.

I htought thats what you mean but my point is that with a bb grneade theirs a bang and flash, if it lands behind you, you know.
Mightbe bit trickier with a whistling foam ball, gues it just needs trialling.

"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
I have heard of the use of sabots to enable water bombs to be fired, you could possably do the same with a bag of corn flour which should mark the point of impact effectivly, and you could use the proximity rule to decide if someone was 'killed'.

But in theory everyone has to then consent to havinga bag of flour dropped on them and potentially meaning a trip to the dry cleaners?:
Its liek the old supersoaker idea, you start to deviate away form airsoft once were into the realms of nerf rockets/supersoakers/ bags of flour etc etc.
personally im not that fussed i'm just 'iceberg spoting' and playing devils advocate.

yeah, hence my idea about the bb's and having just enough flour/talc in there so you can see where it's landed and would brush straight off. there'd still the be main element of relying on people taking hits, rather than being 'marked' with something.
Is there way to make a polysterene 'cannister' that falls apart in the air meaning the bbs shower donw liek rain and cause hits, rather htna a gorund burst?

Probably only using explosives...
Could always just try firing bbs out of the mortar... ![]()
Probably only using explosives...
Why not? I mean, you could use the charge from a BB grenade in this system, perhaps making the fuse a little longer. I'm not sure on the legality of launching explosives into the air, though. ![]()

exactly... its illegal to launch explosives through the air...
