I've been hankering after an axis AEG for some time now, I like my Sten , but it's just ....wrong really . Mind you I've decided against selling it so I'll be doing a poor quality Airborne impression at a site near you soon .
I digress
I like the MP40 having had a play with 9mms last weekend, but the "problems" put me off paying 400 quid for it . And I like the Kar 98 as well, but really want an AEG . Shoei made some lovely gas weapons but alas 700 quid is really pushing it .
So cut a long story short, I've had a look around at what could be modified to make a passable MP44 . Warren at S&S does a kit to convert an AK , although its good I think an AK body shape is still a long way from an '44 .
Cut a long sotry short - I've came across Classic Army's CA33 , which is a later generaton of rifle but has the overall dimensions, heritage and shape of a '44, and with some conversion would probably pass quite acceptably .

Main differences being
the stock - needs a wooden one
the foregrip - plastic one out , metal in
the sights - CA33's one removing and new '44 ones making
the magazines - need to be a lot longer
the body - needs the pressed steel ribbing/ stampings or something that looks close.
the finish - most MP44s were appear unfinished and therefore the black paint will have to go and be replaced by ..by......not sure yet
Anyway , hopefully a nice shiny new CA33 should arrive tommorrow from FireSupport , and then will be attacked and dismantled with a view to having a passable MP44 in time for the Clash of Eagles .
I'll keep this posted with piccies and progress
Would have been easier sticking with being Airborne ![]()
AK wood stock, fore and rear sights?

Stock will scratchbuild from plank, not sure about the sights yet . Foresight is staightforward , but rearsight is a lil more complicated.
Yup, Marine ply shaped with a rask will look best. For mags to convert, try DWS UK, they have a supply of 40 round real-deal '33 mags that could be converted, and to my eye, they are about the same length and curvature as STgW44 mags.

Yep it arrived today and is already being attacked. Can't help but think it would have been easier to burn the 200 notes
Hopefully not a project too far.
Will post some pics when I make some progresss
PS Kermit - where DWS i could not find em ?
Should lead you straight to 'em.

Have you heard about SRC's MP40? Coming out in january according to airsoft-news.eu
SRC internals are a bit crappy but it should be all TM compatible and most of their previous stuff has been full metal so fingers crossed!
I've seen this conversion before. Can't remember where, might have been on UKAN.

Meh-lindi did something similar. Looked pretty damn good as well!

Pictures coming soon & you'll all have to squint and be gentle as my aluminium panel bashing is not as good as it could be .
Work done to date :-
Wooden stock including battery compartment made and married to main body
Modern sights removed , nearly finished construction of period ones
Other modern bits like flashhiders removed .
Longer real steel magazine sourced and modified to fit airsoft internals
Plastic forgrip replaced by metal one that looks a lil like the MP44 ![]()
Area round trigger grip modified to look more in period , and areas filled to disguise it's modern roots .
Currently think from 5m this should look quite good, but those familiar with the real MP44 will probably find too many faults.
Sounds very interesting... must have taken quite a bit of time!
Aha piccies , bear in mind it's still work in progress , although it is working in progress ! Trying to replicate pressed steel in aluminium is a dogs jobs , but the body needs far more detailing . Oh an a foresight .

That looks fantastic! Once the foresight is done it is going to look really close. It looks a bit shiny and new in the piccies though - a bit of general wear and tear and dirt will add to the impression a lot I think.
Im Impressed ![]()
Stock looks bloody fantastic!

I don't think the build quality is up for being sold , plus it's a ballache of a job. Cheers for the offer though .
That looks superb, I agree with you that the S&S MP44 conversion doesn`t look right on an AK. It might be worth mentioning to them to see if they can alter it to fit a 33. I was toying with a similar conversion to yours a few months ago but lack of money and expertise put me off. I`m glad to see you cracked the mag problem, something which stumped me when I was looking at the similarities of the two guns. I`m not sure about the aluminium paint, I think I would blow it over with flat black and rub over the high points with wire wool when it was dry. If you need a front sight I`ve got one from a TM AK lying around doing nothing. ![]()
Updated pics - now colourwashed black , still not 100% happy but looks more steel than silver . Also extra ribbing above trigger .
Need to sort out some bakelite looking handgrips and maybe redo the front handgrip . Mind you cheapo MP40 looms.

I'm truely impressed, congrats.
WW2 airsoft is about the look, and that looks like an stg44. So much so that when looking at the pics from Clash of the Eagles, my boss exclaimed
"Look at the guy at the end with an Stg44, is it a Shoei, I wonder?"
to which I replied
"Ha No Mr non WW2 airsofter, it is a CA33 which has been converted." (say in same vein as No Mr.nonCrunchynutter)
Which is praise indeed as he knows his airsoft!
