Hi all,
I would love to come to this event as an axis player but only if I can find a resolution to my Tanaka Kar98k problem!
I just got mine and it seems to be firing extremely weakly - say 240 fps and thats in a room where it is not cold! There must be a fair few Kar98s on this forum - anyone have a problem with low velocity? I used HFC134a and from what I have read everywhere on the net should be getting 400fps+ at room temperature which I certainly am not achieving. Is the Tanaka skirmishable in the winter on any safe gas? Have I bought a turkey?
It does not have a G-Version restrictor in it - though it was sold to me as a G-version but it has no threading to put in the little screw it comes with.
Help me WW2 experts!

Don't have a Kar, but did have a Tanaka 700aics which I believe is much the same .
Did have similar problems with low performance , mainly due to the gas flow valve on the mag . Basically it can leak as it feeds into the bolt .
Try degassing it, spraying it with silcone oil and then working it with your finger to loosen it up - worked on mine . Another obvious one is the hop , but I'm guessing you've already looked at that .
I ran mine on propane from B&Q courtesy of a propane adapter ,the rifle is strong enough to take it , although your FPS might be a little hot for some sites . ![]()
Thanks for the tip but I have found out what is going on. Apparently the gun has been pre-restricted due to new firearm laws in Japan! All new kars are restricted like this arrrgh!
Still now I know the gun isnt faulty it is just a case of identifying the restricted part and replacing it I suppose!
EDIT: Problem identified and (hopefully) solution found. The new Kars all have immovable restrictors in the bolt - this can be fixed with a replacement nozzle! Huzzah!
On another note - what weight BBs are you guys usig in your Kar98s?
Digicon 0.36's in mine. I do wash the graphite coating off though. It tends to combine with silicon in the gas over time and coat your hop-up in sludge.

Do you use green or HFC134a. Is green gas safe for use in the Tanaka?
SIDEARM -
You can oink the restrictor out of the nozzle, its not fixed in place, its just pushed in. If your careful you can put a drill inside the nozzle and when it bites into the restrictor pull the drill out. The only trouble is you'll be left with the unrestricted bolt and no way of tuning the power.

Cheers for the info but I have managed to find a g-version upgrade kit for the Kar which has solved my problem - and now I have the three different restriction options so I am fit to go!
New question - Anyone know where to get a speed loader that will load directly into tanaka mags rather than using the rather fiddly one that comes in the box?
Cheers!
I just use a Marui speedloader, and put a finger and thumb either side of the magazine to feed the BB's in without them flying everywhere. A LOT quicker than the tanaka loader!

Cheers Kermit - I'll try it!
Hey sidearm, where did you get your g-version kit from?
I got mine from DEN trinity. They were very helpful and quick. Its marked as out of stock with them right now though. Maybe you should e-mail them and ask when they are going to get some more in.
Let me know how you get on as my friend is thinking of getting a Kar98 too.
Cheers! ![]()
I managed to find it in stock from UNcompany.
I've only just received my kar98 (G33/40 version) from gunsnguys and its fantastic to hold, lovely bolt action as well. Its the lastest version so it has a restrictor in it.
Havent got a chrono, but it about same power as my UMP which is about 340fps (on ultra gas) at the moment.
I got mine from tokyo model, who I might add where very good it was in my hands in less than 48hrs from HK
What's the difference between the KAR98 and the G33/40 mountain version?
[edit] Crumbs, those are good prices at Tokyo Model. What were the postage / import charges like? (Here we go.... asking silly questions that only lead down the slippery slope to spending more money.... must resist....

You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
The G33/40 is a shortened version of the Kar98. This gave it bad recoil on the real thing but its handier in airsoft form.
Is the airsoft version any less accurate, because of the shortened barrel? I would guess it might be.

You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
I haven't used both so i can't really comment but I imagine the full length would be slightly more accurate. I'm sure any difference would be marginal though.
Believe me mate, in my hands every little helps! ![]()
