Don't get me wrong, the HP is a bloodly nice bit of kit and IS better value although I think the price difference is only £75. Before I had a little go with Jimbo's the HP is what I would have brought, but the normally "gimmicy" electric-blowback action is actually really good on the Ares and you cant help but have a big grin when you fire it. :D

I guess time will tell which one proves to be the most reliable. Ares (STAR) don't have a great reputation for having good internals, hopefully they have addressed that with the Pa-Pa-SHa.

“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."
Adolf Hitler, November 1942

We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."

No I quite understand why you'd go for the Ares, its a great gun. I think Action Hobbies still have the HP PPSh for £250 and for me £100 is a lot for a bigger grin factor :)

I have visions now of Germans and Russians hosing each other with the same gun.

Ah yes you are right Paul, didn't realise Action hobbies did both makes so I was going by the Airsoft World prices for the HP.

Indeed PPSH's on both side is quite likely but it is historically correct. At Stalingrad some of the Pioniere units had every single man in the squad armed with a PPSH!

Agreed. Who can blame them.

I wonder if they'll ever bring out the box magazines for the HP or the Ares

They're supposed to be doing so with the HP.

I just noticed that the next batch of HP ones will have 110-120rnd midcaps, which will be good for restricted ammo games.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tDOsofkdYs

Also the new HP ones have several improvements:

The latest PPsh-41 from Hexagon Production, 6.03 tight bore as standard!! Ver 2.0 fixed the following: (1) re-designed gearbox fixture, enhance durability. (2) Larger main screw (for holding the whole upper part) (3) better aglining of the chamber and gearbox, increase accuracy. (4) Comes with the new Mid cap drum mag as standard, 110-120 rd capacity.

I hope the new mid cap drum mags will be available to buy separately soon.

Hmmm, its a tough choice between the two makes... :?

For the HP:
Better value
Mid-Cap Mags
"Standard" M14 gearbox compatability and parts
"Standard" G36 Hop unit and parts
Sling included

For the Ares:
Really Nice blow-back action (Big grin factor)
Quick n Easy battery change without needing a screwdriver
Quick-Change Spring system to change power for CQB or power restricted events.
Nicer external appearance, stock and barrel shroud etc. (not much in it and not such a big plus anyway as Ruskie weapons should look rough and ready  )

Is it a proper "open bolt" type (normally sits back and goes forward during firing), or the usual farb "closed bolt" type that sits forward and goes back when firing?

It's closed bolt. I don't see how you could engineer it any other way as its the piston which pushes back the bolt as it cycles! The only way you could do it would be to have a pre-cocking gearbox like the PSG-1.

It might be "farb" as you put it, but it's less farb than a bolt which doesn't move at all! It's the nicest blow-back action I've seen on an AEG.

Buy a hi cap and put some polystyrene in it, like the proverbial brick in a Toilet Cistern. :giggle:

I must admit I'd never thought of that! Would still like somebody to do stick mags but will definately look at that idea in the future, thanks.

Got one of these recently (the HP one), mine came without the hop up nub :happyclap: so I need to replace that. I'm really enjoying using it though, it pushes 350 fps and the accuracy is pretty good. I love the noise it makes, it's so easily discernable from any m4 you might hear  . I need to be able to buy cheaper mags for it speratley though.... (£40 is just too much)

Does anyone have any photo's of the 9mm conversion kit. I have made a mock up in high dense foam and it works fine with my MP40/Sten mags but I need a picture of the left hand side (whilst aiming), I have a right hand shot, I need to get some idea of mag release before drawing up plans and getting my lump of ally milled and drilled etc.
Any help would be great thanks.

I'm close to buying a PPsh but would like at least one spare magazine.
Who has stocks of spare mags for either variant.

The only pack I know has some in stock is UNcompany who have HP mids. Airsoft world had some HP hicaps ones but are out of stock. Ares are meant to be releasing some stick mags (550rnd hicaps unfortunately) but I don't know when.
