Main project currently is an MG42 'look-a-like', ie will give a good impression of an MG42, but will not be a 'replica'.

I'm trying to use as many 'standard' parts as possible as I have limited fabrications facilities (toolbox & kitchen table  )

Below are two not particulary good pictures of the project so far ......

One is based around an MP5 receiver, the other a G3 - trying to decide at the moment which to run with :?

I have a disembled MP5, which with the fab'd front end will give correct length, and as it's spare I could fit a 650mm barrel, which should give excellent accuracy for harrassing fire down, for example, a beach

Alternately, I have an upgraded SG1 arriving shortly, so could leave the receiver & barrel as is and swap between a 'normal' SG1 front end and the MG42. Obviously I could fit a long barrel into the G3 receiver, but couldn't then swap between the two without stripping it down to change barrels. The G3 receiver makes the whole set-up approx 4" too long and the normal length barrel would be approx 200mm short of the flashhider.

For either, I'm planning on getting a Mos-Mag, and cutting off the right-hand drum, so as to give the impression of a left-hand drum feed mech.

Either stock will recieve a plywood 'coat', to give a more realistic profile, whilst retaining the battery compartment for ease of fitting, and ability to use standard batts.

Also once I've finished it, I'll probably sell it on, so needs to have best re-sale value.

So .... dedicated loooong barrell MP5-based, or 'swapsy' SG-1 based - thoughts, comments, ideas gratefully received.

NB: 'Rivet counters' beware - Raspberries are locked and loaded !! :)

Cheers for the input, guys.

Will probably go with the MP5 receiver, just because it's spare - just need to get the correct mos-mag and convert/butcher Or maybe use a 240-round 'twin' mag, remove the second mag and replace with a metal drum - mag will be the wrong side but then we're not stitch-counting !?

Biggest problem at present is how the fab a 'believable' hand-guard, due in part to the length - what did you use for yours, Warren ??

Ahh, black nasty !! You gotta love it ....... front end of my M16A1 has been held on by it for years !!

I've been looking at tubing but I think I'll need to use plastic as it will have to be cut length-ways to clip around the lower frame of the cocking tube - hopefully held in place at the receiver end, just by it's shape and rigidity and fixed to the bipod mount of the SG1 handguard at the front, and clipped on as normal via a handguard pin :?

Think I've sorted the handguard .....

Longest barrel I have to hand is a spare SG1 length (467mm ??) but that stops 2/3rd's of the way down the outer inner barrel :? so my concern is that the bb's will hit the rest of the outer on the way down to the mussle, However, the only barrel that I can see that would do the job is a Madbull 650mm, but designed for 'normal' aeg's (PSG-type is different) @£40 +p&p (new) - any cheaper ideas/sources ?

Mag-wise again I'm struggling to find any 2nd-hand - looking for one of these, to cut off the r/h drum to give a l/h drum feed .......

But failing that, would one of these be acceptable as a 'look-a-likey' ??

For a cheaper barrel option take a look at this thread http://www.ww2airsoft.org.uk/php/phpBB2 ... ght=#14500 it's about using ally tubing from B&Q, if you go for this option you'll need to take a bb with you to check that it will fit as sometimes the internal diameter is to small.

With regard to the length of the barrel I've seen a discussion on another forum about the 'suck-back' effect, apparently if the volume of the barrel is greater then the volume of the cylinder the bb wont have reached the end of the barrel before the piston starts moving backwards and this will suck the bb back down the barrel, I don't know if this is correct but it does sound logical.

I've done a bit of modding in the past and there are issues with cylinder/barrel combinations.
Thinking about it, I believe the PSG-1 has a special piston/cylinder set up so the length of the barrel could be why ??
I'll probably stick with the SG-1 barrel for now and see how it performs.

Should have now sourced a mag (altho. a G3 type not a MP5 type as prefered)
I've found pics of Mg34's and MG15's (MG08's ??) with a twin drum mag but they are mounted higher up the reciever so a chop job is in order ....

from this

to this

to give the MG a recognised image !
