Does anyone know whether this is possible? I have 5 real 20rd Auto Ordnance Thompson Magazines sitting doing nothing. If they could be converted in to airsoft mags then I'm all ears, I'm just not sure of the mechanics behind it.
Anyone got a clue?

It has been done, if I remember correctly you would need to do a certain amount of filing to get them to fit, have a look on the US forum as I think that's where I read about it.

just a thought,,,,,,,, yith has some 9mm UZI mags that are fitted inside thompson mags for firing blanks,, maybe you can get airsoft mags and fit them inside the real ones.

The fellow on the USWW2 forums is named TommyGunner. He converted 20 I think to airsoft. He'd be the fellow to contact. He may have a thread on how to do the conversion in the technical sections somewhere.

yeah TommyGunner has done some nice conversions - not just Mags, Spiers :good:

It'd be cheaper to just buy TM thompson 190 round mags than to buy 'donor' mags for real steel mags you have no guarantee will fit without major fettling (especially if you're planning on making them hicaps), plus the tools and parts needed as well. RSOV do 2 locaps for about a tenner if you're thinking of lower capacity mags.

er yeah... why knacker up a real mag when perfectly good repros are cheap enough?

Anyway, what would you do to get the internals... take them from an airsoft mag? In which case I see no point at all!

I have 5 real ones I'm doing nothing with, I was planning on making them out of lo caps, the cheap lo caps you can buy are plastic and cheap enough to be reasonable donors where as to buy 5 of the TM 190rd mags would be mucho expensivo! Especially from China.

I'll give him a PM and see what he thinks.

I know they'll need filing, just from looking at it and the way its made, the guide at the back of the mag is too wide and the fins on the top which hold the bullets in would have to be filed down.

I think it's worth a try because the mags I've got are surplus to requirement and if I just try it on one and it works then why not! Plus then I've got an Auto-Ord Mag which is full steel that fires bbs! I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow and have a think.

Sell them on the ww2 reenacting forum - with the money by the cheap lo caps - just 'cos your not using them doesn't mean doesn't mean no one else can.

Had a fiddle this morning and took apart a Cyma mag. I don't see how it would be possible with Cyma lo caps, because they're not in a sleeve like the TM ones so they are simply too wide to go inside the metal mags and the TM Lo caps it could potentially work but it would mean, again, taking it apart, chopping the middle out of the Lo Cap, shortening the spring, grinding the sides down by about half a mil...in short more time than I have spare at the moment.

Yith, pm me with you want them, could only find 3 mags but they're all Auto-Ord, Bridgeport, Conn. not one of the bastard companies that made them else where. Yours for £25? Is that a fair price? They're going for £10, £15 and £20 each where I found em on t'interweb.
Anyway PM me and we'll bash out a deal.

sorry for revivng the thread, but I wondered how is this project going?

I'd like to know is it possible to convert real steel thompson 30rnd mags into airsoft by using KA 110rnd magazine?

or is it too complicated?

Never happened. It wasn't possible to convert the plastic mags in to the metal jacket outer of the mag and there's no point converting the TM metal ones because...well you'd be converting a metal mag in to a metal mag.

I don't know about the KW ones though.
