Got a bit of spare time at the moment so have decided to attack a project i have had in mind for a bit.
Seems the problem of the ruskie forces is being quite outgunned at events, only Porta's and Tiny's Maxim has been the only support weapon in field. So time to address this comrades. I was thinking of a DP28 machine gun using a M14 as the base, some of you may have seen pics of one such project over on the US ww2 forum, but then a trip during the summer to Cobbaton military collection and i saw one of these:

Its a DPM, a 1943-1944 updated version of the DP28:

Now i have an old RPK laying about gathering dust and believe it would make a good donor start. So i have stripped it down and got rid of all the bits i dont need and am ready to start.
Now this is not going to be a replica but more of a representation so please dont comment that a detail is not right because with out using real steel parts for some of it and having my own cnc machine it wont be perfect. I have enlisted Doc. to make a few bits for me and sure he will post them up in this thread when he has progress to report so i will leave them for the time being.
The main body will be done using a section of aluminium box tubing got off ebay. the reciever from the rpk will fit snuggly inside this so i dont have to do too much regarding gearbox and mag well. With regards the mag I am going to feed it off the short AK mags as dont really want to do too much messing about with feed mechanisms at present but once i get it all together that may be a project for the future. The front heat shield is a simmply piece of 40mm plastic tubing, coupler, and blank end. Did it this way for a few reasons. one to keep the weight down as its a problem with my bren that i do feel it after a weekend toting it about and two to see what processes are needed before maybe creating the parts out of metal. so progress so far:

I know it doesnt look much yet but give me a bit of time and it will come together to give ZE HUN! invader something else to think about :D
Thanks for looking and any comments appreciated but be nice :P
Cheers Kieran

Little progress today.

Sorted gas tube out for below the heat shield.

A length of brass tube from hobby shop and a couple of 8mm plumbing fittings from B&Q

Little steps but in no rush anyway,

Nice and simple and easy front sight is next on list.

im not sure if you have seen tinys mg42, that feeds from below with a short ak mag,

very easy to do, and it cant be seen when you fire prone anyway.

good work :good:

Yes mate considered the P90 option but that would take a lot more work than I am able to do at the moment, and to be honest I believe it may become vastly over complicated. So that's why I am being a wimp and using the short AK mags as feed.
Thank you for all your comments and input so far guys.

I'm watching this one with interest. I started a Maxim project a while back but getting the mount correct is a proper pain, this idea looks a lot better. I've got p90 internals so may even attempt a top feeder. Keep up the good work :good:

Don't know if you've already got a mag for this, if not Saracens exports have them, http://www.saracenexports.co.uk/shop/sh ... =Magazines about half way down the page, 3 mags in a metal can £40 including postage.

Nice work mate, looking good so far :D . Like Porta said, when I did my MG42 I wanted to have a really custom feed mechanism which could use either a drum mag or a minimi box mag in an ammo tim and a long feed spring so it took time to set the weapon up, but I just opted for the short ak mag cos it was a LOT easier! I used an AK cos its very simple to strip/work on/aquire parts. Looking forward to seeing this progress :good:

My Two Cents.....

I hope I could be of some help with this LMG.
In my approach I was using M249 GB and many parts from the real DP-27.
Nevertheless, the heigh of any present and popular GB's is approx. 1,5-2 cm large than original DP receiver/trigger/butt frame assembly. But below you can find detailed views of DP (Diegtiariov Piechotni). I have detailed 1:1 documentation of this gun (for modellers) for sale too. Anyone interested PM please. PayPay accepted.

Got a lot of the bits needed to progress this along.

Have put most of it together to get the first propper look at how this is going to work out:

Am quite pleased with how its going. the only thing i am going to change is to increase the length of the heat shield.
Over all the gun is 1220mm long and seen as the real one is 1270mm them am pretty much bang on which was a good guess :happydance:
Bits left to do is getting the mag and bipod sorted/ordered/ and attahced, get the rear sight fabricated once mag is fitted, and then finishing varnishing and painting then strap a mag in and watch it go...

I know nickname this project Lazarus!

Right after languishing in the project pile for a bit have finally got round to doing a bit more on this. A) because i have a few days off without the missus being about to give me jobs and B) I have another project in mind to start and dont like leaving things half finished.

So today I have:

a) Resized the heat shield and drilled and cut all the holes.
b) Fitted bipod
c) Fitted pan magazine
and d) given the whole thing a coat of primmer

and i must say i am a very happy bunny :happyswing:

So stuff left to do:

a) Finish marking and drilling fixing holes
b) Mount front gas block
c) Stain stock
d) Final paint
e) Test fire
f) Re route wiring
g) Find a rifle case big enough for it :giggle:

So not a lot just need the missus to disappear for a few more days! :giggle:-- attachment is not available ---- attachment is not available --
