Quick reply? No. No it is not.

A mate of mine has one, and while it looks and sounds the canines cahones, it is a rubbish airsoft gun.

For a in game MG-42 go down the route that SGT.Heide & I went down and make your own !! Search the forums for our thread - buy MG-42 base gun, AEG gearbox etc.

Ghost, perhaps you could give a rundown on why it's not suitable :)

Knowledge is power and all that ;)

Ok, (this is all heresay, I've never used one, only going by what I've seen, and been told) well, first off, it's not terribly accurate. It also shoots about 200fps, which means the target has time for a cup of tea while they decide which way to dodge the rounds. It's bloody heavy (i Know that one for a fact!!) and has that bloody inconvenient gas bottle (my mate has his in the gas mask tin, but still, the tube gets caught in everything!!) which kills it for me. The general 'use' of the gun is far outweighed with the 'uselessness' of it for me. Oh, and the fact that you are easily outranged by modern gas pistols kinda boots it in the balls too!!

I should add, in all the years Ernie has owned the gun, he THINKS he has had ONE kill!! Even then, he's not sure!! But the sound of it firing is like a psychological weapon, people just WILL NOT stand up when it's firing at them!

Based on what I've read on various forums I agree that these don't seem to be skirmishable 'out of the box' however if you are willing to spend the time and money on them they can perform very well. A long time ago I found a tutorial on what you need to do to make these work, if I can find it again I post the link.

Finally isn't there someone on this forum who has/had one, I'm sure it's been used at one/some of the games I've attended, the only one that I'm sure about was the Arnhem game (Bridge To Far), if so they're the best person to answer this question.

Thanks a lot folks, it seems to me that you would need to be patient in order to get your Shoei MG42 to work like it should. I do have a Viva MG34 but my dream was to put a airsoft machinegun on a tripod like this:

The original MG34 tripods are expencive but I have a Norwegian converted to MG3 and it also fit a MG42 so that would have been fantastic :D

OOooooooooo someone with one of the infamous elusive Viva '34's! You could make a hefty profit if you sold that on here...

The Shoei MG42 is a fantastic airsoft gun provided you have a two-three man team, authentic rifle/SMG mixes and you are prepared to do some modifications. I had mine from when they first came out (had a guy in Japan source it for me), but it wasn't until the work was done before it could be skirmishable.

I had a page on jagdkommando1.com (when it was still up) with details of the work done to convert it into a skirmishable rifle, but off the top of my head, we

1. got an inline pressure regulator and adapter for paintball CO2 or compressed air systems from Powerball (?) on Eastern Road, Aldershot
2. shortened the spring length by inserting a length of reinforced silicone hose behind the enormous brass block inside the receiver to increase the rate of fire dramatically
3. extended the inner barrel as the rounds were hitting the flash hider and breaking off before leaving the gun
4. built a modified drum mag with an electric feed to replace the very tragic 200 round mag that comes with the gun.
+ a few other things probably, but can't remember

I took this gun to Stirling Services' old site and the sound of the gun and the rate at which the BBs hit the window openings kept heads down enough for the AEG users to assault the building. We took one position behind a car for cover and one person was able to operate the gun without any problems until the box mag battery failed and the CO2 bottle emptied at a rate sufficient to form frost on the outside. My main change would be to not use CO2 as there is a danger that the temperature of the air towards the end of an extended spurt of firing will damage the hop rubber as well as dramatically changing the muzzle energy and therefore trajectory of the BBs. Compressed air is more expensive, but should be more reliable for the fully automatic action required (as opposed to single action for paintball).

The gun demands to be used as it would have been used, by a two/three man team in a fixed position pumping out the rounds either to defend a flank or provide covering fire. If the skirmish requires a lot of mobility and rounds in the air (unrestricted ammo limits), get an AEG, but against an opposition equipped mainly with single action or semi auto rifles with just a few SMGs amongst the 'officers' or 'special forces', this is an intimidating gun to be up against.
