As an aside, did you know (generically speaking) that Christopher Lee (famous British actor) was an SOE staff officer?

From IMDB about LOTR - ROTK:

While filming Saruman's death scene (now on the extended DVD), Peter Jackson tried to tell Christopher Lee how to react and breathe after he was stabbed in the back. Lee, a WWII veteran with British special forces, assured the director that he knew what a man sounded like when stabbed in the back.

Would you really stab someone in the back? Not one of the quickest life ending locations.

At which point does Saruman get stabbed in the back? Or did I miss a bit? I thought all you saw was Gandalf say he'd locked himself in his tower?

Grima stabs him and pushes him off in the director's cut.

Yea i remember that bit (in the extras) Lee tells him that the victim makes more of a kind of 'huh !' sound as opposed to a 'sigh' they wanted to originally use.

Dispatching from the rear was common practice (works best if you are left handed), one hand across the mouth pulling the head back whilst the other slides the blade in sideways between the lower ribs in an upward direction (last thing you want is for it to hit a shoulderblade)

[off topic]
When i used to work in burtons i had an elderly chap came in for a pair of boots, when i laced them up for him i did it in the traditional 'ladder-lace' style. He said 'ah good lad, glad you didnt do it like the jerries' (referring to the cross-over style). He went on to tell me that commandos and such during the war would creep up behind a sentry and run their fingers over the laces, if they were cross-laced they would get knifed. I thought that was really interesting . . .

Hehe, that old chestnut - I've heard that attributed to Burma-type scenarios. I'm sure its an urban myth though, whatever the scenario!

Tad fooked if said sentry was wearing jackboots!

You do know Sir Chris is Italian Royalty dontcha????? His mum was a Contessa or some such....... He has a huge interest in the occult and I once met him at a book fair where he was searching for "Bookes of Magick"......... He was very pleasant until I made a crack about enjoying seeing him in Sesame Street.................................... Apparently vampires have no reflection and the same can be said of their sense of humour.........

Oh - and Gurkha never draw their kukri unless they draw blood, they all have bags of ears and my mates grandad used to throw stick grenades back at the Jerries because if you held them right at the end of the stick - if it went off you wouldn' get hurt!!!! (just chucked them in to keep the shoelace story happy)

PS - told you no1sonuk would turn up

Not really... they wouldn't be ladder laced either, so you'd just kill him. ;)

Hi, a quick note to SOE and Prophet, as you guys are quite new - please don't be offended by people's humour on here - IMO, this is one of the most friendly and respectful forums there is, and nobody is trying to belittle anybody with the previous replies in this thread. :)

hey, Steiner.

Thought long and hard before i wrote back to your last message.

When i first decided to make contact with you guys, i did read your "read this" stuff, and it did mention things like "mind your language, because this is read by people all over the world". (Para phrase)

So when some of the replies came back it was a bit of a shock, this is read by people all over the world and to someone that doesn't know you all, it does look like you are happy to take the disrespectful pi** out of a person that is, whether you like them as an individual or not, more than willing to put themselves in harms way to protect our way of life. (at least as it was!).

This is how it looks, whether you mean it or not.

As an ex serviceman myself (Marines) i don't feel comfortable with that.

As a site owner/operator i don't feel comfortable with the notion of hosting games for people that may think that way.

There is a bl**dy long line of service men and women out there, even more in Valhalla, that do deserve our respect, no matter when they fought.

I understand your reply, and if what i have said is to heavy for this place, ok, no worries, let me know, otherwise, maybe this is something you want to give some thought to?

Still hope to get to know you all better.

Cheers.

SOE.

I think everyone appreciates your points SOE.

I think the sheer magnitude and homage that we pay to those who fought and died for our way of life, is reflected by what we do,.. why we get together and have these games. Any comments made about a particular individual, no matter whether theyve got a filmography as long as their whatsit or whether they returned down the coal mines when they got back;.. I don't think there is any disrespect to them as an indivual, or the forces/war department as a whole.

past or present :)

I personally don't think any of it was disrespectful, tbh, C. Lee is one of my personal heroes.

Having said that, i feel that it shouldn't come to the point where we are unable to mock a man that has spent most of the last 50 years wearing false teeth, a silly cape and pretending to be able to turn into a bat, solely due to the fact that he did some truly worthwhile service to his country in the war?

No one said anything derogatory about his military service, however, he's predominatly known for being in a bunch of ropey horror films with wobbly sets, hence the jokes.

PERSONALLY SPEAKING: I'd also temper that by saying that the fact that someone fought for their country in a war doesn't give them the right to avoid any future criticism or mickey-taking, regardless of their personality and general demeanour.

Anyway, this has all gone deeply off-topic, so perhaps best to get back to the point, eh?

*Edit - Natch, DM got in there before me.*
