Evening all

So when the AGM sten cme out i could contain my excitment no longer and bought one tout suite. Of course the earlier models had the fixed hop (and narrower stock tube). This wasnt a problem so i read on the AW website. The gun works just fine, all it needs is slightly heavier ammo as the hop is rather 'aggressive'.

Upon test firing my sten i had nothing but problems unfortunately with the gun choking up and double feeding. After stripping the hop unit down i found that in lieu of a hop bucking they used a small spring laid on its side, well mine had two entwined. After removing one of said springs and reassembling it was working better. It still double fed a little bit but only on the 'first part' of the magazine. My guess was simply that the gun didnt like too much pressure in the hop unit. Fill the mags with 40 rounds or so and its fine . . .

However now its annoying me . . . I want my full 50 rounds damnit ! Even better i wouldnt mind using the KA 110 mid-caps but i had to sell them for obvious reasons. Dont get me wrong, i like the whole reloading thing, especially for WW2 games. The only problem is that until i can get my sten running smoothly i cannot seriously recommend it as a skirmish weapon . . . Thompsons pee all over it.

So does anybody know where i can obtain an adjustable hop for the sten as id really prefer to use .20s. I have to use .25's at the mo as .20's sky after 30 feet. Also has anybody got any ideas/had the same issue with the fixed hop units ? Like i said previously id like the full 50 rounds . . . I have changed the hop rubber for a new JG one i had lying around as the stock AGM one was very tough

cheers

I`m reasonably sure there was a modification from one of the Sten owners on here, involving drilling a small hole and installing a grub screw. I`ve done a search but it must be tucked away deep in one of the Sten posts somewhere.

The mod Slick63 mentions was for the original Viva sten which had no hop because it was just an AK unit rotated. I'm not sure it would work on the fixed hop unit. Here it is anyway though, Yith's post with picture on page 8 of this thread -

I did the mod on mine and it works a treat, but I don't know how long the hop rubber will last bearing on just the end of a grub screw...

1000s and 1000s of rounds if my star M249 is anything to go by.

If not... then a new hop rubber is hardly going to break the bank.

Thanks for that guys. I think i might have to go down the grub-screw route . . . The hop unit is slightly different on the AGM version. I have attached a rather poor drawing . . . The red line will be the ideal point to drill. On top of the hop unit there is a small block held in place by two pins, this holds the bucking in place, it depends on the location of the front pin. I cant remeber but it might be right over where the bucking sits . . . If so i might have to rig up something else-- attachment is not available --

That's good to know. I was thinking of taking it apart again and maybe pushing a tiny bit of rubberband down the hole then screwing the grub screw in but it was shooting so nicely at Op Impromptu that I think I might as well leave it if it'll have that kind of longevity.

Would a small ball bearing help?

While in the process of making a suppressor for my adjustable-hop AGM sten, I've had it apart and taken these photos for you:

I assume the metal plate is used to carry the hop-adjusting grub screw, while making the block machining easier.

This one shows the hop unit pulled out so you can see its construction.

Cheers for that. Ive actually installed a grub-screw now. Havent had a chance to test it properly yet but it all appears to work fine.

Mmmm, nice idea. Might give that a go myself, as I went the route of the cut down bit of bic pen internal to replace the sideways spring, but it does tend to shift at the worst possible moments and half my range!!

Even with the smallest grub screw i had it only left less than a mm on each side of the hole i drilled. Its a very fiddly job !
