Very nice Pete,

I think I'll keep my RAC Shell as a RAC Helmet, get liner and chinstrap for it and get one of your fibreglass jobs, para liner, leather straps for my Polish impression.

Ok, I'm now geared up (and with time on my hands) to begin full scale production of these. I can get a few made in time for Lightning if anyone wants me to bring some along.

Sounds great, are you thinking of fitting liners and chinstraps in them or just the shells ? :good:

Pete, glad your back on your feet!

Can I have one please and can you advise where to get the liner and chin strap from? Is it worth trying to batch an order up to get a bit of discount? Also, does it need specific bolts to look right?

Cheers mate, I'm still not 100% but at least I'm back home and semi mobile now. I'm not too up on suppliers for the innards for airborne lids. I believe you can get chinstraps from sof for about £20. For a liner, I'd personally just use foam to keep the cost down. No idea on the bolts I'm afraid, although with a helmet net and scrim fitted, I'd suggest that there's no need to be anal about what bolts you use. I can supply stainless steel nuts & bolts if people want them as well.

That shell looks superb, great idea and excellent work. With a bit of careful DIY work anyone should be able to get a decent helmet for under half the price of a Pegasus one. Are you going to be able to post them? If so how much posted? I hope so because I'll certainly have one.

I can see no problem with posting them. The only factor is the cost, which will probably be almost as much as the helmet itself due to the weight.

SOF do liners for £39.95, leather straps for £20 and webbing straps for £15, Warren also does leather straps not sure how much for.

I guessed postage would be around that price which is fine. To keep the overall cost down, I'll be going for SOF canvas straps and using close cell black foam rubber (from the local RC model shop) to make a liner round the rim and a crown pad. Put some netting on it and you've still got an authentic looking helmet for under £50. I'll keep an eye out to see when you've got a few ready.

I'll have at least 10 of these ready by "Die Glocke". If anyone wants me to bring one for them to the game, please let me know, as I need to save the space in my car for them. Price is confirmed at £10 each, which is the "cost price". After Die Glocke, I can start posting them out as well, and expect postage and packing to be between £7-10.

We now have two of Sgt Heide's para helmet shells, plus two of Warren's chin straps, all we need is to bolt them on.

Can someone please post a picture or diagram showing where the leather chinstrap connection points go around the rim?

Also, what's the approximate size of the bolts and are they brass like the top of the MKII?

I would post a pic of my repro Pegasus Helmet for you to get an idea of where the bolts go but my camera is bust im afraid :( :(

The bolts used on Airborne helmets werent anything special or specific just the std late pattern nut/bolt as found on MKII helmets.

Pete, are you going to Taffys game (Bloody Gulch) as I would like a shell if you have one available.

Failing that I will be at the St Lo game also?

Not going to Bloody Gulch but I will bring some airborne helmets to St.Lo.

We're also making some "Tommy" helmets for anyone who wants a cheap alternative ready for Aerial.
