I have a set of Replicaters denims which have plain green plastic buttons. I also have a load of plastic king's crown "GS" buttons. Do I swap them over?
No, denims should have plain green (or brown) plastic buttons on them... not GS ones.
After all they're basically overalls!
Denins should have the revolving shank buttons which are held in place with split rings so can be removed easily for washing the Denims

Surely officers would have had brass regimental buttons for their Number 2 uniforms. Did EM have them as well then?
What you have to remember is that Denims were purely work/utility/fatigue clothing hence their designation of OVERALLS and would be used for all the shitty jobs around camp such as punishment,kp,jankers,painting the coal white etc.They were also i believe used by some troops in Italy or the Med in warmer conditions.

Forgot to add that the plastic GS buttons would be late war economy ones as brass was by then in short supply so do not know what items of clothing these would be used on but certainly wouldnt think Denims by either EM or Officers

The plastic GS buttons were used whereever the brass ones were. Greatcoats and FS caps are both often seen with the plastic buttons.
There are any number of shades of sickly green and a few variations in construction. I dont think they were liked by the WOs nothing for the boys to bull.
