I've just got South Staff's and Ox's and Buck's cap badges and I was wondering if they had a cloth backing similar to the black felt with the 2 Commando cap badge.

South Staffs has a bit of hessian glued to the back. It does not extend beyond the edge of the badge, just fills in the holes.

Ox and Bucks has a Rifle Green Circle of Felt behind it.

BTW, which version of the Ox and Bucks badge did you get?

Nah, SoF. I wanted it for the training day and didn't think the WPG one would arrive in time from the US.

The hessian backing was not universally used in WW2 by the South Staffs. Market Garden period photos are showing with and without, sometimes mixed in the same unit.
The famous picture of Corp. Jack Bird shows him without it.

Once sent to Norway at the very end of the war it does seem to be used by all.
