I'm intending to get a jersey which will go with my KD gear. I know 2NZEF usually wore the standard v-neck, which is an attractive option since it was widely issued. The repros of the Indian pattern jersey with chest pockets also looks good, but I am unsure as to whether it would have been issued to troops in North Africa or the Med. Anyone know if this would have been likely, or would I be better off sticking with the standard v-neck jersey?

Personally, I'd stick to a plain V-neck sweater, as it will give fairly universal use.

There were a fair number of private-purchase/knitted by a well-meaning old biddy and sent out 'to the boys at the front' sweaters in use, so as long as it's a suitable colour (khaki/natural/outmeal, not green as it's associated as being a more modern colour), contemporary style and wool or wool mixture ideally, then it shouldn't look out of place.

indian made uniforms and equipment were very widely issued and used in NA and the med, it was quicker, easier and safer to to ship stuff from india than it was to ship it from depots in england and run the guantlet of german submarines based all along the east coast of france. most tin helmets used in NA and the med were made in south africa ( the ones with the 3 holes along the rim at the back).

Primark have tan V-neck jerseys in stock again. Or they did a fortnight ago.

The Primark ones are a bit refined really - modern very fine jersey knit rather than '40s wool jumpers. Posh officer's wear perhaps?
Incidentally, I have two in different sort of buff/oatmeal sort of colours and the sizes are way off - XL is a tight fit on me and I ain't an XL!!

WPG do jumpers that look of the period to me - Sgt. Heide has one - and rather pricey when compared to Primark (which I'm sure cost less than a tenner each!)

Yes, the WPG one I have is very good, nice, coarse wool, comfy and well made. Comparing it to period pictures of my Grandad wearing one in North Africa and in Normandy, it's spot on. It's huge on me though and I've been giving thought to shrinking it a bit. It was a bit pricey compared to primark ones but, I had some money burning a hole in my paypal account at the time! I'd recommend them to anyone who wants to spend the money.

Primark ones are a fiver and while maybe too neat i've yet to be close enough to anyone to notice the feel of the fabric of a jumper under my BD :)

I'm sure the other repros are much more accurate but visually the primark one is amazing for the price. I think for re-enacting 'proper' and interacting with the public the WPG one might be a better bet though as you're more likely to be face to face.

I have the WPG V -Neck and it is great, even if it smells of sheep when you wash it.

If you are, or know, an expert knitter then there is a period pattern for the V-Neck :

http://www.vam.ac.uk/collections/fashio ... index.html

The patterns were for civilians to make them for their loved ones overseas.

Be aware that the needle sizes are different these days :

My Auntie Sheila is knitting me a new "fatigue cap". :)

Awesome, thanks. I quite like the WPG one, and they are pretty good when it comes to shipping to NZ, so that'll be the go, I think.

I'd say save your mum the effort and just buy one - still plentiful and probably no dearer than buying the yarn!

Colour could be anything 'natural' - 'khaki' means 'dust/dirt'

For acrylic sheep (or near as), see here - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... ink:top:en

- Must be right as they're sourced in 'JERSEY' :D

The comforts for the troops home knitting campaign was a great success and introduced some new shades to the armies palette. Green was green and brown was brown, wool was warm and the exact shade was not important to the knitter. There was an effort made with official issue of yarn for home knitting but most folk got stuck in with what they had to hand.

Well, I found :

http://www.shetlandwoolbrokers.co.uk/

The 'Jumper Weight' yarns "can also be used in vintage patterns which call for '4ply yarn' ".

The cap pattern calls for 4 ounces which is about 125 grammes, the yarns are about £1.95 for a 25g ball. or £2.95 for a 50 G ball of "Supreme Jumper weight". (Shade SSJW: 2004 looks good). So about £10.00 +P&P for mterials. SOF sell them for £35.00 each*. It helps if you have an aunt who is an addicted knitter. :)

*Edit - £20.00 for a used one.
