The 1911 was usually carried in the standard 37 or 44 holster.
There is a twin mag pouch for the pistol but its rarer than panda spunk.
Kit looks great btw guzzi!

you can also use the Canadian browning holster????
correct.
There's a matching double mag pouch that goes with the Canadian holster. SOF sell them as well. Or at least they used to... hmmm I can't find them on their website. It may be worth asking them about it. If they don't sell them any more then I'm glad I got mine whilst they did! ![]()
SOF have still got the pouches under British WWII Equipment - Webbing items 41-48.

do'h so they do Pete... how did I miss them!
Guzzi... real ones are like rocking horse poo... repros are reasonably common
Also to note (just in case anyone is interested), the 'standard' Brit '37patt holster comes in two variations. The first is with the popper in the center of the flap, and the second has the popper offset to the front of the flap slightly to make the flap close at an angle. The second style is the more commonly found style and allows more space for the fitting of different sidearms, and was available from the start of the war also, but the ones produced by SOF are the first style mentioned and 1911 are a bit more of a squeeze to get all the way in.

Ah thanks for that. I knew there were two styles/patterns/sizes of 37 pat holster, but I didn't know the details!

Carefully undoing some of the stitching near where the trigger guard is should do it.

As a follow up to my previous post, here's some pics' I've dug out! (Sorry about big pics

First Variant:

Second Variant

EDIT: Don't get the round flap ones. They're a weird Canadian-designed version for the .455 Webley:

Excellent... thanks!
The second variant are more common, more useful and were found right at the beginning of the war (I have a '39 dated one). I've never seen a genuine first variant one in person or in period photos, only SOF repro ones in person.

theres two photos from Sword beach on D-day that showed Lord Lovat and 4 commando just after they arrived on the beach - Lord Lovat has a browning automatic holstered in a webley revolver holster.
Mick, the old boy who used to live oposite my pub said his CO liberated an automatic and wore it in his webley holster too....its where i put mine, fits after a fashion ![]()
Mikey
tried all sorts of holsters with the need for them to be accurate for the period and more important- I have to be able to draw that colt when I need to and not be fiddlind around with a holster whilst jerry is trying to brass me up!
so far I have used a strange brown lift the dot fastening holster that once blancoed was dark green-
the problems I have with it is that I have a narrow waist and not a lot of room on the belt once I have the ammo pouches, water bottle and gas mask pouch.
I tried this holster on my right hand side and due to the angle it sits at I have had to reach quite far round to draw from it, a problem not helped by the fact that once I lift the flap, I have to reach into it to grab hold of the pistol. not easy even with loads of practise!
'58 pattern browning holster- very cheap to buy but not correct for the period due to the anodised fittings.
this was located on the right and sat at a better angle, easier to draw from but a pain to close once the gun was re holstered!
I could loose my left ammo pouch and get a brace extender to wear a holster in it's place but am not happy about losing the load carrying capacity from doing so.
then,... I bought a shite repro tankers drop leg holster from sof-
this was a tight fit with the colt so I unpicked a few stitches, prevented the stitches from undoing further by sewing it with linen thread. blancoed it and wrapped the colt in plastic and holstered whilst the blanco dried
I am very happy with the feel of this holster, it is very practical although debris could foul the pistol whilst scrambling around in the dirt! I have got hold of a pistol lanyard to prevent the loss of the pistol as the popper fastening that this repro is fitted with is not as secure as an original.
now I will probably discover that my pistol has fallen out of the holster only when it swings on the lanyard and bashes me in the kneecap or worse!
"Major Bernard Himmler, does the name mean anything to you?"
The tanker's holster does sound the best of the batch.
'58 pattern would be wrong because its 13 years after the war finished.. ![]()
yes, although apart from the colour and fittings it does have the same design as the canadian browning holster which are £35 as opposed to £5 for the '58! even so, the tankers does seem to be more practical from a users point of view although, it does have it's share of faults!
now if I could get away with it I'd choose the US leather colt holster over all the brit canvas shmutter any day!
next problem- where to holster my welrod look-alike ruger Mk1 ?!
my reason for needing a holster in the first place was once my No4 arrives I will be bound by the minimum engagement distances that sites impose due to the muzzle velocity being greater than aegs, I need something for when those pesky germans get a bit closer!
being a marshall myself, I find it very annoying when snipers that we allow to run up to 450fps abuse the engagement distance and although they spout out all the "one shot one kill" nonscense, they cannot judge 20 metres! (cheapsoft sniper rifles in the hands of teenage users is becoming a bit of a headache at our site so we are now testing users, then issuing a proficiency ticket which is revoked the minute they abuse the priviledge of greater power) sorry to go off target guys!

Tank holsters were nearly always cut down to fit on the belt as they are a ballache on the leg and snag on things.
There are one or two famous pics of low legs ones in use (cpt. killick at arnhem and a commando officer) but quite often cut and restitched to hang as conventional holsters.
The MKII RAC holster comes cut down because of this.
The other way to wear a holster is the french sas way of putting a pair of brace extenders on your belt (reversed so they point down) and hanging the holster off these.
I cant recall which one but one commando unit had a standing order banning their use as they did foul up the pistol too much when crawling in soft ground.

next problem- where to holster my welrod look-alike ruger Mk1 ?!
In a small/large pack?
Down the front of your denison...
which is a point... the denison has two internal pockets, which are ideal for storing pistols...
Work well for mp40/sten mags too....

I have the Browning one and it fits a 1911 just about. I got mine all wet when blanco-ing let it dry with the pistol in and now it fits like a glove. Tip: remove the metal casing for the spare mag - it rusts like crazy once wet and also digs an ugly groove into the trigger guard.
