I live in Minehead, which is ironically opposite the site on the otherside of the channel! But anyway i could meet You/Them/They in Minehead, Taunton or Bridgewater (store Manager lives there) I am 19 and can go halfs on petrol! help would be great!

unfortunatley bamboo is in short supply on exmoor, could try wheat storks, good idea too, don't think a punch drunk brit would be a very effective para!
get gear? tell him not to be cheap and pay the extra and rent the gear.
Surely getting the gear would infact be more expensive than hiring the gear, Vi sa'vie making him not be a cheapskate?!
