Well ive decided on my unit to protray. The 17th SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Götz von Berlichgen". I chose this because of there links to Normandy 1944, and links with the 506th PIR. I use them as my 101st loadout. I believe they fought against each other in and around carentan.
I was wondering if anyone has any images of this division during the summer of 1944.
Thanks in advance.
Anyone else? im particularly interested in creating a Normandy 44' look. Does anyone have a picture of a typical grenadier in normandy?
Also what type of camo was used.
Dot 44, oak, Plain tree. The beautiful thing about waffen is the range of camo used. I tend to use either Dot44 or my oak. you can mix and match field grey with dot 44 and its thew tits. Blurred edge is also a nice look. The thing about Waffen camo was the dyes used ran when it got wet and produce very indistinct shapes. P

I like the blurred stuff.....Well i've got a few books coming but unfortunatly i think one just has black and white pics....
i like the tan and water camo....I dunno. Im out of my comfort zone with german kit. So i think research and alot of learning is needed.

why not buy some books ?
Panzers in Normandy by Eric Le Fevre (After the battle Publishing) has a great deal of photos from the period and a lot of info regarding the units that fought there .

I've bought 3...but only 1 has arrived at the mo...I've got
Waffen-SS Uniforms in Colour Photographs
Men-at-Arms 415: The Waffen-SS (3): 11. to 23. Divisions
and an older book called "Panzer Grenadier Division, Grossdeutschland" from ebay
This picture has always fascinated me

Not sure what he is wearing though apart from its cold.
If you want to know the full story behind that sequence of photographs, where & when it was taken etc then you want Battle of the Bulge Then & Now by John Paul Paulud . ![]()
They are a Heer Division ![]()
You mentioned a Waffen SS Division as your impression.
Its panzer grenadiers...that im interested in...i just assumed that all the grenadier divisions were part of the SS. I initially looked at the GrossDeutschland, but then quickly realised that they fought mainly in the eastern front. So moved onto the 17th.
Thats why i mentioned the splinter camo in the PM as the front illustration of that book shows a grenadier wearing it.
Either had panzer grenadiers, it just means armoured infantry.
Most german infantry we're called grenadiers halfway through out the war as a morale boost as in germany the term 'grenadier' has always implied an eliteness.
The GD were a heer division with an elite status akin to the UKs Guards Armoured Div.
Other renowned Heer units were 116 panzer, panzer lehr (panzer training school) and the Brandenburg Division.
I wouldn't get too hung up on camo, get the field grey first, you really need that more than anything.
The guy in the pic is part of a group of men that have a *lot* of captured US kit on in the series of pics. One of them is wearing a US overcoat, caused a lot of em to get shot as 'spies' at the bulge as they stole US winter kit as their own was a bit lacking at times.
That photo is taken from a famous propaganda series where a group of ss guys 'pretend' to attacka US column that had already been annihilated hours before.
