Right, buckles now soaking in Hammerite rust remover. Can anyone recommend a suitable clear primer?

Clear primer????????????

Not sure there is such a thing.

If you want to keep the buckle unpainted you could try Rustins clear laquer that works on brass and steel-stops tarnishing etc

Yeah, as you can guess from my lingo, I'm not very experienced with DIY. :roll: Tug Wilson recommended Plasti-kote.

Yep, looking much better now. I didn't have a wire brush, but a wee scrub with some wire wool cleaned the rust scum off nicely. Dried them and sprayed plasti-kote on them, and they're looking good.
