I've no idea what type of metal German belt buckles are made of - what's the best thing to clean them up?

There are two main metals used for belt buckles. Stamped steel and cast aluminium.

I soaked some 'green' brass 37 webbing in cocacola and it came out like new.

Brown sauce and a foam/brillo sink scrub pad work well on metal work too...

You could also do what a lot of German squaddies did in the field and paint it. My steel buckle was rusted after Churchills' Revenge and proved almost impossible to clean up. So, I gave it a good going over with wire wool, then painted it field grey. Hey presto! Easy to keep clean and no chance of it rusting.

When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!

"You're mad," my son said to me. "Ha, just you wait and see - tomorrow morning they'll be like new..." Only they aren't!  Sorry to say, the Coca Cola didn't do much at all - the buckles are still brown / rusty / oxidised. Before I go for another loopy suggestion like brown sauce and brillo pads, and endure the ridicule of my family once again.... any other suggestions?? :|

The mistake you made was using farby Tesco own-brand diet cola, which won't do the job. CocaCola - It's The Real Thing....

Hammerite do an excellent product-think its called rust remover(what else!!!!)and comes in either a paint on gel or a liquid where you believe it or not dilute with water then soak rusty item.Used both and both worked well.
Once had an original dug up SS buckle which was just one cake of rust-the gel brought it back to fantastic condition

I just got one off Rhys - are they supposed to be painted or bare metal - which is more likely?

Either mate. They were issued plain, but some troops painted them.
