Right well I just got my leather harnes from Soldier of Fortune but am not entirely sure about its assembly. The Y straps have 2 connections on each front strap - a hook like metal piece and a d-ring with strap. Where do I attach these and which goes outer most on the belt. Also do you have to bend the hook bits tighter in order to grip the belt properly?

Also how high should the belt sit on the body? Not on the hips obviously so at the navel? Just above it? Cheers!

Best Picture you'll find:

The belt is worn quite high. As a rule of thumb, it should ride above the diaphragm, at about the same point where your elbow will touch the side of your body.

Oh, the "spare" straps are for attaching the Tournister pack or A frame combat pack. Bend the hooks in as much as possible so they dont slip.

You may find it all slips around when you try to put it on . I've found doing up the belt first, then slipping on the shoulder straps and then undoing the belt and refastening around you waist stops you having to pick half of it off the floor.
Gas mak container is the most useful thing for sotring BBs and the like in, it's also water proof, followed by the bread bag and water bottle. I don't bother with an entrenching tool , or a map case or a pistol but thats just my personal preference .
I though 58 pattern was bad but the German stuff is more cumbersome to get on
It's no wonder you see Germans helping each other to get the webbing on straight ( well me and CW anyway  )

PS although they are a bit of a rip the belt hooks you can get are worth paying for, at least they stop it all hanging down over your tunic pockets. !

Do you know where to get belt hooks? I'm after a couple of pairs.

Thanks
