It could have been done far better, it had a all star cast too including Kurt Jurgens, Rod Steiger, Richard Burton & Robert Mitchum, Burton does look a little like James Coburn
i managed to get an english version if anyone is interested, notice how clean their uniforms stay.......... Its actually a completely different film not really a sequel at all. IMO, anyway

interested also, I need to buy cross of iron on DVD - it's one of a few I still have to get. i had on tape, but haven't had a VCR for years lol
For me, Cross of Iron is one of the few films I can watch again and again - it stands the test of time very well, unlike some other war films.
The opening and closing credits and music are IMHO some of the best ever.

For the "ostfront" look drybrush or colourwash with good old household matt white emulsion , and then wash most of it off. It'll help with the shine and make the helmet age a bit .
Sweaty, can you clarify the terms "drybrush" and "colourwash", please?
Also, I have some "fine" sandpaper - is that OK?

Here are a couple of good articles from the Gross Deutschland re-enactor site on helmet paint jobs.

i do agree, i have always enjoyed its dirty gritty 'realism'
Are you guys aware (im sure you are) that there is a film of Sven Hassels Wheels of Terror?
Yep , got it on video ! It's a bit pants but not as bad a people make out .

Drybrush - dip brushtips gently in pait, wipe most of it off, and then lightly brush against object
Colourwash - Water the paint down and splosh all over the helmet, let it dry a lttle and then wipe most of it off.
In the feild the whitewash would have been roughly applied , and over time would have washed or rubbed off. This is the effect you are lookng for as an old sweat !
Sandpapers ok, but you'll just leave scratches which will look too contrived -finer wet & dry will remove the paint more evenly and look like wear rather than damage .
Nice links BTW
Thanks for the explanations. Ich bin ein N00b!

I'm making it all up as I go along mate !!!
It's odd painting things 35 times bigger than I'm used to !
I got a cheap steel pot off ebay last week, here's a couple of pictures of what I did to take that 'just new shiney' look away.
Start to finish took about 15 minutes once the decals had dried.
Gave it a light 'mist' of matt acryllic varnish and then dusted it with 'burnt ochre' paint pigment
Let it dry, rubbbed away what I didn't want & then repeated the process
Kept repeating untilI got the desired 'look' finished off with a coat of matt varnish
Don't know how authentic it is but I am pleased with the result, looks better in real life

Great work mate.

Well, I started work on my shell tonite - been rubbing away with wet n dry 240, and gave it a bit of white emulsion.
Gotta say that burnt ochre looks fantastic - is it spray paint, or what?

'burnt ochre' is the colour of a powder paint pigment I bought in a local art shop. Cost about

OK Guys, any idea what I can do with this?

I'm not sure which of the following to do, Firstly, got a REversable Oak A cover coming, and I have scrounged an old innertube from work, But I cant decide to do in the long run.
Whatever i do it will first be repainted and a home made foam liner added(with a liner It is too small).
Faint whitewash for the russian front look
Over paint it yellow and dip it in sand for the DAK look
Paint it with Light greens and yellow with a chicken wire cover.
Leave it pristine Waffen SS Shell and just use the camo cover to protect the paint.

If it's black, then it would have been a parade ground job only - not for combat use.
Me, i'd give it a good going over with RAL 7021 feldgrau mixed with some fine sand to give it some texture, put a single decal on it and then kick the shit out of it to get some dings in it
Reminds me. Ive got another M35 on the way to paint as well

It is black but thats coming off. Its a post war helmet that some numpty has f*cked up, I will paint it as a double decal field helmet, so If the fancy takes me I can do Early war.
Good point there. Do it as "early" war lid and it'll fit the whole 39-45 timeframe - certainly something you cant do with a '44 Normandy camo scheme!

Another daft question - when subjected to rain, won't it just all wash off?
