Vinegar soaked steel wire wool then boot polish/black dubbin. They shouldn't really be black but black-coloured brown, if you see what I mean. The same method as low boots really.

Donner und Blitzen - it worked!!
Although a couple of differences from the guide... the steel wool did rust, but probably just the bit that surfaced above the vinegar, and the solution did become discoloured. The blackening process occurred immediately, not only after drying. There was quite a bit of rust, but that easily brushed off when dry.
