Is there any difference?
Are these suitable for both or are they likely to be too shiny?

I'm looking to relace buttons on a swiss tunic.
Hi Raffles, those would be fine for a Feldbluse (tunic). If you don't like the silver colour, just give them a once-over with some grey-green paint. For small things like this that can't sensibly be sprayed with RAL6006, I use a mix of olive and grey model paints - does the job.
I have seen period photos where tunic buttons appear to be silver (or the paint scratched off?), but I personally prefer them to be painted.

You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
It seems the majority of period pictures show unpainted buttons? They were not 'bulled' but they do seem to be lacking paint.
Painted ones do appear but not nearly as many.
A style/fashion thing like adding green collars to later tunics?
A little tip, buttons are easy to spray paint. Just push the loop into a slot cut in a sheet of stiff card. Lots of buttons = bigger sheet of card.

Ah, I missed this when I replied to the 'wanted' thread.
Yes, lots of pics do seem to show unpainted buttons although I wonder if it was just that the paint had worn off? I've done my Swedish jacket conversion with shiny buttons and it actually looks very smart, I can just see the girls flinging themselves at me as I march down the street
Out of the box the Epic ones are very shiny, although not polished, so for more a 'field' look they might benefit from an inkwash or simply having a bit of dirt rubbed into them.

Thanks guys! Back to epic then.
I am right in assuming that black plastic buttons where never actually used am i?
Many modern plastics hadn't even been invented in WW2, but they did have some as well as bakelite.
My LFD jacket has got purple plastic/bakelite buttons and my FJ jumpsmock has similar ones in dark grey.
A brief web search turned up various examples of original German uniform jackets with various types of plastic buttons, but I couldn't find any examples of M40 jackets with such buttons on the front, so I don't know really.

The Germans used Urea based plastics for buttons and also glass.

I have never seen original pebbled tunic buttons in plastic of any kind.
