Not really expecting many people to go for this, but it's an example of how to put together an authentic late war German impression for very little.
The Volkssturm was formed in September 1944 by a Führer Decree and they were made up into four "levies" to defend German soil against an Allied invasion. Some were very old, most were very young, but a good few were of normal military age who worked in reserved civilian occupations. From 1945 there were also women Volkssturm soldiers. Very few were given any type of uniform. Instead they were expected to supply their own clothing and equipment and this is what makes a Volkssturm loadout so affordable - you simply put it together from 1940s stuff you already have or can get cheaply.
In this example, the only piece of issued kit is a reconditioned M1918 Stahlhelm. Boots, trousers and puttees are civilian hunting attire and a leather satchel carries his ammunition and limited equipment. The jacket is a civil service one with the insignia removed, replaced with collar tabs that identify him as a Zugführer, or Section Leader. He also wears a WWI EK2 ribbon. All the Volkssturm wore an armband that identified these combatants in civilian clothing as members of the Wehrmacht. This armband was supposed to protect the Volkssturm man when surrendering. In this case the Zugführer has opted to wear the armband as a cuff title to avoid it being confused with a party armband.
Thats awesome mate, how would you feel about having that loadout in the mag?

I'd be happy to.
Apart from the weapon there's not a single item that was over £20 to buy. I was especially pleased with the tunic - ex Swiss air force; £8
(I did have to change the buttons though).
Love the kit
Such an easy loadout to do, and looks the part.

Excellent link, Poacher.

I used this as a reference site - then threw history out the window (as is my wont)
The problem I have is that a 1st Levy loadout is too similar to regular Heer and involves buying stuff, whilst 2nd Levy is basically just 1940s clothes and thus not too exciting. So I've gone for a 1.5 Levy look ![]()
Am I right in thinking that this would be the ideal loadout to go with that nice new STG44 that's coming out? I'm sure somebody said they were issued to the crack troops and the crap troops. Not that I'm wanting to insult the loadout, I'm under the impression that as they wern't drilled and experienced soldiers, they were issued a weapon that had a good rate of fire, if nothing else to make up for their lack of experience. ( works with the AK worldwide today! )

I'd say yes Jimbo, but for 1st levy types.

2nd levy got older rifles, captured stocks often, ammunition was often an issue.
It might make an interesting twist in a game to really limit the ammo for the Volksturm and limit their movement. They were last ditch home defence after all. The german side could have a few more troops but they would be limited in their effect. Who would want the job?

Really nice loadout there. Volkssturm is certainly something i'd like to put together eventually as well.
If there was ever a 'Last days of Berlin' game done, i'd be desperately split over whether to play as Russians or Volkssturm.
Another aspect to this, which I've only just thought of, is that it's the perfect Axis loadout for the swastika-shy (or swastika legislated) player. Just make your own swastika-less armband and save another £12 into the bargain.
