Cobblers! A question...

After sliding around North Wales at the Bloody Gulch game, I've decided to take the step of purchasing some hobnails and having my jackboots resoled.

My question is; for those of you who have done this before, is it fairly straightforward to get a cobbler (Timpsons, et al) to do this? Does the leather need to be replaced at the same time? What will I look at paying?

Thanks in advance.

find a real cobblers first - the more old skool the better. Bound to be a few in EDH.

What are your boots like just now? pic of soles would be good.

have you got your German hobnails? what about heel plates etc

I went to a 'traditional' cobbler to have rubber replaced with leather sole. No problem and didn't cost a fortune but I supplied the ironwork (which I think came from ebay).
Don't go to one of the 5 minute key cutting type places though!

I'll get a pic up in a min, Deek. The heel plates are worn a bit, but there still has to be a good 5/6mm left of them. The toe plates are a bit more worn.

The outers are worn and muddy - the way I like 'em!

ETA: There are a few nails left in, worn to almost nothing.

I'm in the process of sorting metalwork for my leather firemans boots (god knows what they did for grip) My hobnails arrived from Ebay today and I've found Blakeys heel horseshoes, but unsure of how they are sized, so sent the seller a question. Local old school cobbler said if I supplied the metalwork, he'd bang it all in for a couple of quid :good:

You can buy hobnails, and pretty much anything else to do with leather from here...

http://www.leprevo.co.uk/

They are based up in Newcastle and are the most helpful people in the world. They understand reenactment and at least one of the staff is a Dark Age buddy of mine.

I am not sure if there is anythig specific about WW2 hobnails, but I've done dark age shoes before myself. All you need is a last and a hammer - it's easy.
