I think I agree.

The dunkelgelb look is pretty cool but i think the red brown is a bit too red/pinkish (could just be the pic).

I always likes this scheme on kubels

Still a wicked vehicle anyway, nice one Dave i'm well jealous! :)

Blimey, hope you are joking biguk - that's hideous!

Gaz's car isn't desert but factory finish with a bit of camo slapped on, but as a personal preference I do like the grey kit better...

Thing is Big mate , its not a desert scheme its done in.

In 1943 all* German vehicles came out the factory dark yellow or 'dunkelgelb' as they had massive shortages of green and grey paint. Some vehicles came out of the factory with a factory applied red brown and dark green scheme on them but many (mostly tanks) came with a compressor kit, spray gun and two tins of condensed paint like shoe polish- one red brown the other nearly black green.

In theory you were supposed to mix the pain up with petrol and apply a scheme approved by the company commander to the vehicle.

In practice there was never enough petrol to waste making paint so water was often used, also the spray machine took up room in the tank so it was binned by the crews and the paint put on with brushes, rags or by hand... it was also pretty much left to the individual crew or platoon as how to paint stuff.

(check out the picasso StuG if you can)

Equally using different solvents and water in different ratios meant the green coudl be anything from apple colour to rifle green and the brown from tea/coffee to almost black.

So although it looks like a desert scheme its actually a NWE scheme for anything post 1943 , weird eh?

* late war they ran out of yellow so you see some vehiclesd in red primer or polish or czech paint.

I think the "after" pics look good.

My latest acquisition is a No.4 spike bayonet and frog (what's left of it). Survived 60-odd years intact before being sliced up by me using a kitchen knife in my haste to open a new parcel of "army crap". :slap:

Ahhh got ya, Its not too dissimilar to the "normandy" colour scheme, which im guessing is down to what gadge said...Im serious about the VDub Thing chommers.

Its unlucky about the Bayonet Frog, i thnk the phrase "DOH" :slap: springs to mind.

Yup a lot of helmets were sprayed en masse at unit level while you could get hold of someone with a working spray kit.

Most heavy equipment is 'dunkelgelb' post 43, tripods, panzerfausts and shrecks, even binoculars got a coating.

Actually works pretty well too strangely.

Interesting article (if you're a geek like me anyway...) here:

Thanks for all the comments, buts lets not forget its not a real kubulwagon just a VW 181 iam trying to make look like one the best i can, as for the camo all i know is after 43 all axis vehicles came painted in panzer yellow the camo was added any way they could as gadge said they even used mops but when your on the back foot the last thing you have is time to make the camo look like a work of art just got to add jerry cans on the back and she is finished.ANY WAY ITS MY CAR AND I WILL DO IT HOW I LIKE
