Not Today I, but This Week I was working with the Army (British) in Lubbecke, Germany and stayed in one of their educational establishments called Church House.
Church House has a fascinating story, it was built in the 1930’s as a ‘Leaders School’ for the Hitler Youth. As activities declined later in the war, it served as the HQ for the Waffen SS Liebstandarte during late 1944, until captured by the British in April 1945.

Lots of history at this place and it was amazing to have the chance to stay here and have a poke around. There still traces of its Third Reich origins to be seen, particularly the removed Eagle and Swastika (see picture below) as well as ironwork for ‘1938’ and ‘HJ’ (Hitler Jungend).

Having trialled my Aussie impression at Normandy yesterday, I am in considerable pain and haven't done much. I did pick up the amazon package from the locker in the co-op across the road. It's 2 books; The Australian Army in WW2 and Australian Commandos: Their secret war against the Japanese.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0811 ... UTF8&psc=1

Given that I have based my Aussie loadout on a mixture of what they had when war broke out and which bits of kit they might be able to obtain easily from the British, with a fair bit of guesswork, I was pleased to find a picture of Aussies in Libya. In this picture they are wearing Aussie service dress jackets with P37 webbing and anklets. The trousers are not denim battledress but in terms of bagginess look about the same minus the pocket. My information up to this point was that KD and P37 webbing was not issued to the Aussies until they had been in North Africa a while, I had made the assumption that Webbing would have been obtained 1st (mainly so I didn't have to fork out for P08 webbing). It would seem that my assumption was correct :happyclap:

Received M38 lace up US leggings and HBT trousers. The leggings looked complicated so I found a guide http://www.90thidpg.us/Research/Origina ... ndex1.html
The HBT trousers are pretty nice. Very lightweight and massive pockets. The plan is to use these with a green shirt, Slouch hat and P37 webbing as a late war Aussie impression. If anyone does a PTO game, I'm ready :)
Failing that it should be a nice cool summer walk on impression.

Found a para beret with King's crown cap badge for a tenner at a market! Got that setup off and added my Recce Regt cap badge. What a steal.

Oh, and a spare trench whistle. Can't have too many of those ;)

Got made redundant. It's an odd feeling, after being 20 years at the same place.

That's always an awful thing to happen, sorry to hear it. :(

Sorry to hear that Andy. There is something new and exciting out there for you - in the meantime, get the garage and loft cleared out and that living room decorated!

Sorry to hear that Andy :( , same thing happened to me about 6 years ago after 20 years in IT, I'm now doing well in a new career as a RF/Electronic technician half way through an HNC which with luck will boost me to Engineer status end of next year, not bad as I was 50 when I lost my job.

So keep positive I'm sure things will work out for you

Andy, that sucks. 20 years. I know job hunting is one of the circles of hell but keep your chin up and try to enjoy some of your time. Before you know it you will be back on the 9-5 and wondering how you never quite got round to re-blancoing your webbing...

I can only echo the above sentiments Andy. I was also made redundant after 20ish years with a company, to be honest there have been some ups and downs since then but all in all looking back I am glad it happened. Its just at the time its hard to imagine a differant regime and the fear of the unknown. Best of luck :good:
