A "vented" cylinder could possibly do it. The "500FPS button" could be a valve that closes a vent when held. Then the spring and vent are tuned to get the required different FPS numbers.
This would eliminate the need to recock for a different speed, but would probably require the cylinder to be fixed, meaning it'd not be a simple mod to existing springers.
I'm not sure if venting the barrel would work in the same way.
Barrie I think you are right!
I got the chance to use the military version of Laser Tag MILES? in the 1990's. It had units for infantry up to MBT's. There was software i the emitters and recievers so infantry could be killed by a tank but infantry fire was only effective on soft targets. It was still line of sight so hiding behind a small bush was effective if unrealistic versus a 105mm HE round. You could use it it conjunction with blank rounds so training sounded realistic and simulated the command and control problems of hearing and shouting that we do not get in Airsoft. The reciever units fitted on the helmet and chest and would look a little odd on WWII kit. Once hit the unit emits a tone that can only be stopped by lying on your back until some one comes and switches you off.
Some of the others with more recent military experience can say if it is still used. I got the impression that training staff were a bit reluctant about it as it showed you all to easily how the result of a platoon attack is only 6 or 7 of you on your feet at the end and the rest of your oppo's lying around the battlefield.
So if you can produce an effective and robust version of this I think you are on to a winner or another franchise business at least.
Well, civilian 'laser tag' here already of course and the fact that it hasn't been embraced shows while it has some advantages it has many disadvantagesso we would just end up with something different, not better.
