Morning chaps

So i finally got a Sten at Christmas, and now i've got round to scraping together the cash for the rest of the kit i'd need for a basic Brit Airborne impression.

I'm looking at a Smock from here Here, as a friend who does this sort of stuff tells me this is a good deal, and i'm currently trawling ebay for cheap webbing and trousers (37 or 49 pattern it seems).

Now, i heard somewhere that in ww2 berrets were larger than they are now? Is this true? Should i be looking to buy a bigger modern one and alter the band, or is there somewhere that will do a ww2 style one? *EDIT* Nevermind, Search-Fu came through, bigger from a re-enacment supplier it is :D

Also, i considered Puttees (cheaper :L), but Anklets (seem to be like gold dust D:) seem more common in the pictures i've seen? (That said, i looked again last night and i'll admit i can't tell if some of the guys in the kit guide photos are wearing puttees or anklets?) I searched this too and it seems to confirm that Anklets are more popular, but are puttees acceptable if i can't find them?

Anyway, sorry for the question dump, but any help would appreciated...

Can't wait to start playing in this stuff- look forward to seeing you all in the field :L

- peeb

Welcome to the forum :good:

Where are you?
If you put it in your profile it helps now and then for game recruiting or to tell you places to buy near you etc.

A real Denison looks more like this.
They are pulled over your head but many do use the one you show.

Maybe a standard Brit tunic would be more applicable to different games.

Welcome to the forum peeb.

Don't buy that Belgian smock for £50! Complete rip off and only vaguley looks like the real thing, you would be better off buying a secondhand repro WW2 Deinison or saving for a new one.

Hello! Welcome to the forum and WWII airsofting. :)

My first advice would be not to rush into buying anything - if it's wrong kit, you won't be able to sell it on very easily. Build it up bit by bit, unless you've got a lot of dosh! Secondly, it's up to you how accurate you want to be - there are "looks like" items that are perfectly acceptable in events, but the more you get into it, the more likely you are to develop an eye for what is correct over what is cheapest.

Taking that smock as an example - it's a Belgian post war one, but the repro WWII ones look much better. Search for "Denison" at http://www.sofmilitary.co.uk to see one.

Regarding webbing, I would advise trawling ebay to get real stuff, rather than SoF's reproduction webbing, which is rubbish. Search for 37 pattern and you'll get loads of hits. Your basic webbing should be a belt, a pair of ammo pouches, and a pair of cross straps (make sure you get one "female", so you can link them across your back) and a pair of anklets - puttees were not used as much. Any other bits of webbing can be added later. Battledress trousers - depending on what size you are, you might be able to get 49 pattern, which you'll just need to add some pockets to, to make them like 37/40 pattern trousers. (I expect there's a guide on how to do that on here somewhere.)

The most important thing (IMO) is to get involved in events. Too many people spend their whole lives buying kit but never attending an event. Have a look at the event section. People are always offering to lend kit and guns for FREE (on a bend it, mend it basis).

Hi guys, thanks for that.

I'm not much of a stitch counter tbh, i'm just after the look, but if that Belgian smocks really so bad i guess i'll put it off and trawl abit longer. I'm getting married in september, so i basically have a full calender until then in terms of games i can come to >.<

I'm looking to get a tunic in the long term but liked that smock for now as it seemed comparatively cheap and i'm an avid Company of Heroes player '>.> Is it something i can get away with at games or is it going to get me stuck on point?

Updating profile with location- I'm in York :D

£15 for the Belgian smock is OK as a look-a-like. I'll sell you one for that if you really want one!

Oh, and I also have a repro WW2 Denison I could be persuaded to part with along with battledress trousers (and a jacket if you are tiny). What size are you?

If i could get a look-a-like for £15 that i could bomb about in for a couple of months that would make me and the wife very happy! I'm looking for cheaper stuff to begin with because a) wedding and b) i want to see how this stuff stands up to airsoft. Once i've paid for the wedding and got a real job (anyone in york hiring? '>.>) i'm going to be much more inclined to start dropping bigger money on more gucci kit...

Am a 38 - 40 chest, 32/34 waist, 32/34 leg.

The question is what % or games does a Denison fit in with, don't think I can answer that though. :P

When we did Arnhem I wore one of these and it only cost £18 I felt the colour and fit looked better.

compare with a decent one.

Better video here http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?doc ... 631244346#
while google video still has it I am told these will all go soon

This was an early game/ event before people got better looking guns so you will see AK47 not MP44's.

Spearhead Militaria are fair/good for the price :good:
I've always not been too keen on their BD, as the pockets look a bit too large...

Hi

just a quickie

how long have you been airsofting ?

if you've come to WW2 after having played airsoft a bit , then splash out on the kit . If you have airsofted much then probs not a good idea to spend too much until you have a few events under your belt.

Once you add the shipping into the equation you would be better with a beret from http://www.epicmilitaria.com/product.ph ... ret-maroon
You can get a badge from e-bay for £4-5

Been airsofting for about 4 years, so lets just say i've shot a few guns...

Also, too late, ordered it '>.>

I should probably explain my urgent desire for airborne kit. Basically, theres a game called Company of Heroes, in which the British get Air Landing Gliderborne troops. Who're Awesome.

Why ask if you intend to do it anyway?
You have just spent more money on an indifferent product.

I asked, got a positive reply, and did it. And tbh that one you linked looked abit modern in the photo.

Also thread title.

Poacher often speaks his mind  one of the things about getting older.

The point is more we see a regular pattern, and this isn't aimed at Peeb......new person comes on , spends shit load on kit worrying about the right badge or the wrong button , goes to one or two events and decides it not for him, or worse "can't afford to go to an event " ( yep we've heard it) , because they've spent too much on gear. Often the gear finds it's way back onto the for sales thread 6-8 months later without ever having met the chap . Thats fine if that's what you want from your dabble with WW2 i suppose , justs seems a bit of a waste of time and effort .

Better to not spend shit loads, beg borrow stuff for your first few events , get a feel for what you like and see other peoples kit , and then fork out and but some decent stuff. Ask PVTJohnny , that's exactly what he did and I'm sure he'd say it was a wise move on his part.

Bit like deciding you might like golf, forking out £1K on" the right clubs" and another £500 on membership just to find you you can't stand golfers.
