We'd also need to be entirely green and bring our plastic bases with us

 There's a hero right there! Love it.

Back on topic, there's always one, and today its me asking the silly questions (there is a pattern, and yes they're always the same  ).

What with time and money being what they are, is this a "stitch counting" event or are we able to wear reasonable "look-a-like" gear?

I'm asking from a basic plain German Heer infanterie uniform point of view and then only because you mentioned all the "gold KM buckles, breast eagles, tresse, litzen and old fashioned mitred-end shoulderboards".
And can I ask about footwear? Brown hiking boots with gaiters covering the tops ok?

I have amended the uniform requirements as I think they were a little misleading.
There are five different flavours of Kraut to choose from:
Kriegsmarine Infantry
Heer Infantry
Coastal Defence Force
U-Boat crew
Kriegsmarine sailors.
We want people to stick to these requirements to the best of their ability and within the constraints of their budgets. For this particular scenario a bog-standard Heer uniform with modern black walking boots is perfectly acceptable - a stitch perfect Waffen SS uniform isn't :D

TBH there is no real need for lookalike kit. If you don't have a particular item there will almost certainly be someone who will lend one. In the past we've kitted out newbies from head to toe.

I sooooo wanna do the kilt! I s'pose one would cost a fortune! I'm also happy to dorn my mk11 for battle! Uniformity does add so much. I still get goose bumps recalling 20 plus germans all in field grey piercing the smoke and cresting the ridge at sevestepol! Awesome! Totally awesome!

You can pick up an ex military kilt on ebay ,usually about £100 but you can get lucky
Or you might be able to pick up a lightweight (cheapo tourist copy) that will look ok for as little as £20 ,
look for government pattern, seaforth, black watch, gordon etc.again ebay is probably the best bet, but if you do ,don't forget the socks as well.

Got a pair of Scots's brogues should anyone go down this line - probably not the best combat footwear tho!

I'm a hero with coward's legs.
