Excuse my use of the term "squad" - it's probably not correct, but I am referring to a group of 10 men or so. I know traditionally, it would have had mostly rifles, a couple of SMGs and an LMG section.

Quite how this would translate into airsoft is another question. From experience, I can tell you that the MP40 is a very good airsoft weapon indeed. The so-called "second batch" weapons have an improved range which would give a bolt action rifle a run for it's money - certainly if we armed ourselves "traditionally", we would find ourselves outgunned in most circumstances.

But, a Bren section would be most cool! What donor gun is used in the Bren, and what's the range like?

A standard 10 man British army section consists of:

Corporal armed with an SMG (for airborne that means a Sten MkII or Sten MkV)

Lance Corporal armed with a rifle (more likely to be a sten in an airborne unit)

Bren Gun No1 armed with a Bren gun

Bren Gun No2 armed with a rifle (again could be a sten in an airborne unit)

6x Infantry armed with rifles (stens are possible in an airborne unit)

So its possible to have a lot of fully auto weapons available to us!

In wwii as now its called a 'section'

(squad refers to generic body of men for dril purposes)

A rifle section (infantry battalion 1944) on paper composed thus:

Cpl with sten
6 x rifle men with no4
l/cpl with no4
Bren gunner with bren
Bren gun no2 with no4

An airlanding battalion had a much higher proportion of stens, up to every third man if needed.

Casualties upon landing could make section under strength

In battle an airborne section could consist of between 4 and 10 men with every conceivable mix of the above + mp40s, mp44, k98s mg34 and mg42

Whatever they could lay their hands on and had ammo for basically.

As Yith and Gadge say, but i can quote the SAA instruction Pamphlet No 4(I think) the Bren LMG 1937 (if you let me know, i can email all of them to ppl as PDF files or send them in the post as hard copy for cost) says its
Section ic - Cpl with sten and 250 rds 9mm ball
Section 2ic(bren team commander) - l/cpl sten and 250 rds 9mm ball
Rifleman X4 with 50 Rds Small Arms Ammunition + 2 full Bren LMG Mags
Grenadier (X2)- Rifle, 50 rds, 3X Mills Grenades, 2 X Smoke/WP Grenades
Bren Gunner, Bren and 4 Full mags
Bren No 2, Rifle and 8 Full bren mags

This is a standard infantry section dated 1937, a full strength section in action would carry more of ammo.

the sections were habitually fiddled with at various times and for varying reasons-eg a motor rifle unit would have a smaller section size as the vehicle carrying capacity was lower (etc), also some sections later in war could have 2 Brens! Hows that for firepower? mmm

Its a bit daft, the 6 rifle men had to fill the mags, with 2 brens, they wouldnt have had any chance to fill em at all.

the lads wouldn't be filling mags in the heat of action-they'd be preloaded in the 90% of time that veterans described as those boring moments between getting sh** scared... it was a field extemporisation. Also read tales where although platoon is 30 strong it was often found that ground was only taken by a small cadre of determined men -usually as few as 7 or 8!!!! Rest would be under cover/doing something else....

hey I took it as such :D just thought it would be interesting to continue the patter about how the regs said one thing and reality often dictated something else...
