Yes, those are utility straps, but they are only ever usually used with the large pack.
You do not need utility straps to attach a waterbottle, and were never designed to be used/attached as such. The waterbottle in it's carrier hangs off of the spare lengths of shoulder brace that extend out from the bottom of your webbing belt (one under one ammo pouch, and one from the back buckles).

If there is not enough length, then you either have the wrong size shoulder braces for your body size, or you're wearing your webbing too low (belt should sit on or just on top of your navel, not under it or around your hips).

Cheers for the reply Rifleman, but I stand corrected in that I don't actually need utility straps

Thank you very much McVickers, I'll see if I can get that sorted tonight. Just out of intrest, what do the straps on the other side do if I have nothing to attach them to? :good:

Used to hang the small pack on mate.

Or sometimes the entrenching tool when not worn at the back.

I have a small skewer hidden in the collar of my jumping jacket, and a razorblade in my gaiter, as well as my knife.

Pictoral descriptions of what Bigkie and Universal Gunner have both so quickly added: :good:

Left-hand view shows small pack being worn on back - Right-hand view shows small pack being "side pack'd" when a large pack is worn on the back. (Entrenching tool carrier not shown but normally worn in-between the small pack and waterbottle, in the right-hand view. It shares use of the two rear straps with the other items).

Also, to note, the utility straps across the back of the large pack - primarily used to hold your helmet in place when not worn when travelling.

Picture to show alternative location of entrenching tool carrier in place of the small pack, on the side of the webbing set:

That last one is an interesting variation, I'd not thought of doing that. I find it more comfortable to have the e-tool across the small of my back though.

With cunning positioning of the pouches, you can also fit a Webley holster between the water bottle and the right hand pouch. Should you need to do so. Ahem.

Cheers

I'll have a pile of stuff: Some uniform bits, assorted insignia, a (real but refurbished) German Helmet, and a Brit ww2 Pup tent.

Oh, I've also got a US Army Field Telephone Remote Units RM-29A, if any of you US/Jeep types are interested:
