Anyone know how prevalent these were in the ETO, and which units used them?

I believe, and webby will know better than I, that they were rare as they were a marine thing. not 100% on it but I think I remember him saying that in the past

get a mag bag they are easier and can carry other bits, plus leaves room on your belt for rigger pouches etc :P

edit: answers in the auction

were mostly used in the the Far East and North Africa by the LRRP's and the 503 P.I.R. respectively

I took that as meaning the original rigger types were used there, but they then went into General Issue.

Rocking Horse. A very specialised bit of kit. As noted above a mag bag or GP bag is a better bet for 9.5 times out of 10. I dont recall ever seing one before this image, even the issue 3x30 pouches were not that common.

aka Stigroadie

better by design

Cool, I prefer the mag bag anyway I think, even though it's a bit of a pain in the hole when it swings around. Anyone got any tips for using it?

You might remember the bit in SPR where Hanks gathers up his mags - he ties the bag around his belt instead of slinging it over his shoulder.

Sorry for the SPR heresy, but it's a solution to flailing mag bags!

More of an airborne thing "503rd Rigger pouch" gives it away! I've not seen anything about these pouches, but its up to you Kav, if its more convinient to fit your mags in then its whats best for that.

Rhys the Marines used the 5x20 cell pouch, with the long mags sticking out of the top, and the flaps hooked around the side of the mags. Either that or lose in pockets!

When I had mine, i put the mag bag on 1st, and then put my pistol belt over the top, the mag bag sits where it usually does, but doesnt flail about.

What Webby said. Either than or trap the strap around your canteen on the pistol belt so you can pull it around when you need it.

Looking good webby! Looks like you did the same thing as me - I bought all my kit before I even thought about attending a WW2 event.
