Well you can put whatever you want on it really. It might be wrong... but we won't stop you!

However if you want to do it right then the best thing to do is work out your backstory... i.e. which unit, what rank, where you've been, what date the uniform is being worn, etc...

Once that has been decided you can work out what insignia can be worn.

As a quick note, during the war you'd not get much really, it's only after it that the awards start coming in and you can start to look like a Christmas tree.

Ok, American Campaign... for details of the requirements for wearing that see wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Campaign_Medal

But basically, if you want to have been involved in the early part of the war (i.e. 1942 ish) then you won't get it as to get it you'd have had to be in the US at that point.

For a private, you need a set of stripes, a Division Patch, a pair of jump wings, US collar pins and a riflemans qualification. If its post Normandy invasion then a Unit Citation badge can be worn too but not pre invasion and you'll also need a 506th Oval which is the small red, white and blue stripe oval patch that goes under the jump wings on the breast of the jacket.

It will not be cheap to get these things.

You're talking the better part of £50 worth of insignia.

I'd recommend looking at Mark Bandos website. It is an excellent picture reference source.

Hope that helps.

Oh and lose the ruptured duck patch. It was only word after the war to show you were honourably discharged.

No, not necessary for a buck private. Only for a private, first class.

Not true, actually issued during the war to show you were honourably discharged. It helped to stop 'white feather' incidents. Issue stopped in 1946, it was first issued in 1939.

Indeed it is, though I'd also recommend http://hardscrabblefarm.com/ww2/index.htm (for the umpteenth time!).
