Hitler Jungend ....mind you if you are over 20 probably better looking at another unit for some sense of historical reality .
The 12th does limit most of your activity to the last 9 months of the war the majority of which on the Western front .

And you dont absolutely have to have one.
Not as over done as camo but not every SS man got one.

Luckily Waffen AC has youth on his side.
He totally fits the mold for 12th SS.

 it's not a pea-dot cover lol It's a type-2 model cover however, given the foliage loops ;)

And remember: a soldier never carried all of his equipment into a fight,

The helmet cover looks like good old oak to me.
I'm not sure what Fonte means with his last statement.
What do you mean by all of his equipment? They would take belt order, y straps, ammo pouches, bread bag, canteen, shovel and cover, gasmask and often a mess tin and zeltbahn. Who carries more?
What did they leave behind? Where did they leave it? When you are fighting on the defensive, as the 12th were for most of their existence, the chance is you wont get to return to the same position.
Certain companies of the 12th seem to have got palm tree smocks.

Except for the obvious youth of that MG42 gunner, that is almost identical to my old Waffen SS loadout! Brings a tear to my eye, happy days!

But we also have plenty of evidence that shows they did take their belt kit into the fight. Just look at some photos of the period.
Like I said, where are you going to leave it. Unit transport? I doubt it, by the time the 12th SS were getting into combat they didnt have much left.
You might lose your zeltbahn and not get a replacement for days, fighting on the defensive can cause that. You might 'borrow' one but when all you can be certain of is what you stand up in then you keep it with you.
There is a series of photographs, taken around 9th or 10th June around the Villeneuve, le Hamel, Rots region.
They show the famous machine gunner in the Italian camo combi, Klaus Schuh? He has basic gunner kit and a gasmask can. The rest of his section are loaded down.

The guy in the last three photos is Otto Funk the assistant to the gunner. He only has a pistol, 2 ammo cans and his belt kit, no rifle or smg.
This series I think shows quite well how this company of the 25th Regiment 12th SS looked when they were in Normandie? Very little pea dot can be seen, I saw none. Other companies and Regt got different kit, some just got peas it seems, no smocks or Italian stuff. Some even wore field grey!!!!

Here is same division in peas, get a load of his belt kit?

A full load.

edit
I'm struggling to find any photographs of 12th SS in smocks with peas trousers as per the painting above. Can anyone help?
It is one problem with doing the 12th SS, they were so well recorded in Normandie that it is possible to be quite precise when it comes to what they wore. You can do 12th SS and do it wrong.
