hi
must be coming a bit of an obsession with these but im starting to build another, but gbb this time.
have a few bits left over from building up the shoei g43 which will help out, and going to be using an aim top gbb svd as a base gun. the layout of the svd is very similar apart from the mags being too long, so will re-shell them with cut down mg13 mags which are dirt cheap and will keep it period looking.
only other problem i can see at the moment is the whole action will have to be sunk down an extra 10mm in the stock, this is so the action cover clears the svd recoil spring. this means the barrel will be lower coming out of the stock, but should not look too out of place.
i am currently remaking all the trigger internals on the svd out of steel as they are cheap pot metal and prone to wear quite quick.
some pics so far.

a rough idea of how it will look.

Had the same idea when the aimtop first came out..can't wait to see what you can do with it. Will you have to move the trigger back/shorten the rear of the svd receiver to improve trigger reach? Would you be trying to keep the weight of the bolt carrier roughly the same weight so as not to affect performance? Really interested in doing this as well.

yes fella correct, the trigger sits too high and too far forward so the back part of the receiver will be cut off, but not as far as the recoil assy mounting holes. i will be adding the g43 bolt cover onto the svd bolt but will be taking a bit of metal off it so should be roughly the same weight. i also have a g43 trigger which i will adapt to fit which sits lower and further back than the svd trigger.

stock finally turned up so got to work on it. had to take a fair amount out with the dremel to get the action low enough. scope mount on the side of the svd receiver had to be taken off and the rear cut shorter. the trigger is still too far forward and too high, but i have a g43 trigger on route which naturally sits lower and further back.

Amazing...thanks for the detailed wip pics. I hope you document each step of this epic conversion so i can do it too. Again, amazing.

will this be the last..... seriously nice work so far,i always shy'd away from a gbb base conversion but have a few in mind ,if you succeed i may gather the courage.

thanks guys, will try and log each step as i go.
i doubt it would be the last, i was going to go with a svt-40 as it is a very close layout to the svd, but just could not find any parts for sale.
my ultimate project would be a gbb fg42, but it has given me several headaches just thinking about it lol.

fg42 was on of the ones i was thinking off,was planning on mac11 innards with internal gas reservoir's, another is not ww2 but one of my favourite guns a Beretta 12s with mac11 guts as well.

yes, i have tried to think of several ways to make the fg42 work, including external gas setup, internal fixed mag. will have to bite the bullet one day and just go for it.

have now got the g43 trigger and have modded it to fit in the svd trigger box, it now sits low enough and back a bit further. the svd bolt will need trimming down so that it runs under the g43 bolt housing, as it sits too high at the moment.

Quick update.
have made a new recoil guide block so that the action cover can be attached, and dremeled out the front of the stock to take the barrel.
there are some annoying gaps either side of the action cover where it had been cut, so will have to try and fill these. on side will be covered with the scope rail. having trouble with the gun firing at the moment, not sure why yet but will have to look into it as the bolt keeps getting stuck in the rearward position. need to sort out a trigger guard and buttplate now plus some other bits, but its taking shape.
apologies for the nosey dog lol.

Hi Bud,
I bought the project from Jay, I've not managed to continue with it as yet due to moving house!
Its a reproduction stock (original size) and the mechanism fits in well.
Jay did a great job and it just needs a good bit of adjustment to function. I'll try and continue the project at some point soon and post pics etc. :D

Yeah it still is on the cards to finish Jay, but unfortunately I've just got to select and purchase a new workshop and get it set up before I can move all my kit in and get cracking again on things!
House move all finished now though, although the dreaded DIY has started to be requested by my wife :giggle:
