although the patchett or sterling was only marginally used in the closing stages of ww2 i thought i'd pop this project here unless anybody has an objection.
the base idear is to put a set of plans (supplied by our man fremsley)a few thompson gearboxes ,some modified ak hops and some steel into my shed and leave them in the dark to see what happens.hopefully what will emerge will be three patchett gun's or sterling's if you prefer.the ak hop's will have the adjuster system loped of and re fitted at 90 degrees, the barell will have new slots cut into the sides and be fitted at 90 degrees into the hop, magazines will be stock mid cap mp5 mag's as they are close enough and freely available without me haveing to make a dozen custom ones per gun and as previously mentioned the gearboxes will be thompson ones because the relative position of the pistol grip has to be closer to the reciever on a patchett tan any other gearbox will allow.battery will be either fitted inside the rear like the li-po in the sten or in under the barrel im not sure yet.the construction is planned to be all steel exteernally.im going to be makeing three ,one for fremsley ,one for another mate of mine andthe third i may keep although there's already been some interest in it,at the moment i've no plans of increasing that number although once ive finished them depending on how mutch work was involved i may be open to offers but for now the anwser swill be no.
pictures will follow soon

Wouldn't it be easier to move the hop's feed tube than all the rest of it?

if you move the feed tube you get a weakness at best and at worst feed or seal problems,i prefer to move the hop adjuster as its less stressed as a component than the feed tube in that it doesent have a mag pushed onto it repeatedly ,also the screws will be aligned with the mag well making it easier to strip by useing a screwdriver into the mag well.its how i've done it before verry efectivly on sten guns ,but its just personal preference really.

There is masses of discussion as to whether the Patchett was used ,there were 120 issued for trials in 1944 but apart from 2 cases of the Patchett being documented as used by 2 members of the SAS there is no documented proof, but then as an experimental weapon there wouldn't be .
The Patchett used a straight sten magazine, the Sterling used a curved one,if you go with a curved (MP5) type magazine you are limiting yourself to post 1953.
My own one uses MP40 mags ,and real steel Sterling ones with the feed from the mp40 grafted on ,if you pm me your email address I'll send you some pics.

first three stages ,the plans make this easy ,print them one to one scale and paist on to the steel tube.or it would have been but when i tried the first type of glue the paper stretched 10mm on the long axis ,so i super glued them on ,drilling through super glue releases noxious gasses i discovered ..ho hum

im useing up copies fast ,i made 9 and i think i'll need more before im done.

When we made of the pattern for the Type-100 barrel jacket, we printed a crosshair going through the centre of the holes on the tubes, then used a centrepuch to mark it on the metal - the paper was removed before machining started. Hopefully that helps,
-Matt

a few of the techmical bit's.
first a side vew showing the fitting blocks that will align the gearbox into the main body tube, both black plastick parts slide tightly inside main tube.

close up on front fitting, will also house the hop adjusting gubbins

i moved the nozzle down to the scenter line of the cylinder ,this moves the gearbox up into the main tube more and makes alignment easier, this shows front vew of a standard nozzle position on the left and modified position on right

i left the paper on as it helps with aligning all the other shaped holes sutch as the ejection port ,cocking slot and reciever hole .though you may be right ,i found it quite fiddly just to put the pattern on straight and untwisted once ,so i thaught i'd leave it on untill it was ruined then fit another at that point.the author of the plans omitted to print crosses on the scenter of the holes ,i had to do it myself, rather timeconsuming ,the scenter piont is the only bit worth printing ,the scircle just makes it clearer what it,s for. :slap:

lovely job on the blaster, how did you do the grip's im planing on re-shaping thompson pistol grips by sanding off the separate finger indents and milling in the cross hatch pattern then painting, it should be fairly simple and obviously fit snugley in the standard way.

I just used wood as there are no problems with motors in that thing.
There is a guy on the BBC forum that made an airsoft version a few years back so you could take some tips from that.

You will have to search for it http://www.imperial-fleet.com/BBC/commu ... 9e64142bad

Here is one but not the one I was looking for http://www.sandtroopers.com/smf/index.php?topic=6127.0
I think the one I am thinking of used MP5 parts.

excellent job so far! Just one question will you still be able to use a tappet plate for the air nozzle or will your custom made front end do the tappet plates job for you?

the tappet plate is cut down a little but works as per normal, the black plastick part at the front is just for mounting the gearbox into the gun and aligningthe hop

latest bits ,inner barrel fitted and nose part started ,still need to mill the off-set bayonet fitting at the end.also re-shapeing of the pistol grip ,im afraid the pictures of it didnt come out to well but its a lot closer to the sterling shape thant the original next to it.oh and the inner barrel needs shortening a lot but as this isnt going to be the final barrel im leaving it long for now.

Beautiful work mate, my local site owner is dying for a sterling. If you do a second run or have spares for sale he'd pay a fair price for one!

Keep up the good work

Dave
