After buying my m1 carbine back from Pete, and after seeing the wood on B&A's garands I felt the finish on the marushin gun were... well a bit crap. Even a light scratch seemed to reveal bare wood underneath and the whole finish/stain looked way too light for my liking. Looked more of a show piece than a battle carbine.

Ordered an air rifle stock kit that I've used in the past back in my air rifle shooting days. Its called tru-oil and is made by birchwood casey. Its a walnut based kit which I figured would probably get the nice darkness I wanted. So yesterday in the lovely sun I stripped the old stain and crap off the stock. Left it to dry. Then smoothed it down using the varying grades of sand paper and steel wool included in the kit. Put on 3 coats of walnut oil, as the first 2 didnt get it dark enough then left it to dry over night.

Today have applied 3 coats of the gun stock finish oil and after drying for a while its all now back together. must say im really chuffed with how its turned out. Has a real nice dark finish and the grains come out very subtley in places giving a real nice depth to the wood. I opted not to use the 3rd bottle that comes with the kit which basically is a varnish/sheen solution to give the stock a hand polished look. I wanted it more battered and used looking. Have taken 2 pictures but they must have been in dodgy light as they dont do the colour or wood justice.

Also cut down the barrel collar to remove the bayonet lug and removed the finger pump cocking handle. really happy with its look now :)

was very very easy to do and well worth the time effort and £14 spent.

nice one...

It also has the wrong sights on it and should have a push, not a twist safety... ;) There are replacements parts available... but god knows where from!
