Oddball if you've got proof of what you payed Keith i.e. credit card statement or PayPal printout contact Customs & Excise to dispute the fee's, I did this when one of my orders came in two separate packages and I was charged VAT on half the value of the order for one package and then charged VAT for the full order on the other package so I paid 50% more than I should have when I spoke to C&E they said that if I supplied proof of what I'd paid they would review the charges, the only problem I had was that Gunner had tried to be helpful and what he'd written on the declaration didn't match my record of payment so I decided not to pursue it.

On the matter of paying VAT on postal charges I completely agree, if the value of the goods are less than £18 you don't get charged anything regardless of what postage you've paid however as soon as the value of the goods reach £18 suddenly you not only have to pay VAT on the goods, which although no-one wants to is fair enough, but you also have to pay for the postage which could be significantly more than the value of the goods especially if you've paid for express delivery, plus to add insult to injury they then sting you for anything between £8 and £12.50 'handling fee's', I've just recieced the Invoice from TNT for one of my orders and for goods valued at £212 I'm going to have to pay £99 fees  which as far as I'm concerned is majorly taking the piss.

Glad you agree it is taking the piss VAT on a none UK postal service.
They ask you the total postage charge and say it is an offence not to declare it correctly what ever speed of service you have asked for, and cost incurred.
:x

BB I know the custom's folks are extremely busy - they even closed for a day or 2 last week due to staff shortages.

You could try and call them, but their number is always engaged.

It won't matter, technically you've already purchased it so you owned it before the law changed.

Got a letter from UPS this morning asking for £28.37 on a AKSU they delivered at the start of the week. They say they forgot to ask for it at the door.
The parcel was labeled $80 so that's £40 with an extra £28.37 on top now.
£17.37 import VAT
£11 Brokerage Surcharge

Has anyone refused to pay it after they have the parcel?

Yup... I questioned the price and got it reduced.

This was a parcel from Sanjay sent by DHL. They'd overestimated the value of the item...

I think I managed to save £10 out of a £30 charge.

I don't think they could read Sanjay's handwriting actually.

I told them how much I paid and offered to provide the paypal receipts... which they didn't bother with.

It went back to HMC&E and it was them that changed the amount.
