Not being a complete boffins on WWII I don't know how advanced shotguns were at that time or if they were even used in war.

I'm pretty sure they were invented before WWII because of the medal of honour game... :P

My questions is: Would a benneli shorty look completly out of place or just a big bit out of place?

No idea if I can go yet by the way, just wanted to know...

Thanks

EDIT: just found this on wiki..."During World War II, the shotgun was not heavily used in the war in Europe by official military forces. However, the shotgun was a favorite weapon of Allied-supported partisans, such as the French Resistance."

Any chance you wouldn't mind a french resistance fighter? Were there any in the netherlands?

meh.

Your thoughts please boffiny people :)

Well shotties would be okay... not really for british troops though. Your idea of resistance would work better.

The problem is that the benelli shorty looks rather modern...

Wood effect stock and pump and taking off some of the fore-end stuff might work making look like the 1897 Trench Gun

Hi All

Despite what the Medal of Honor game may have showed you and I have been a keen player of it shotguns were not used by military units in Europe in WWII. They were a banned weapon under the Geneva conventions because they fired a "fragmenting" round so like Dum-Dum bullets they were not allowed.
Resistance and Home guard units whose legal status was dubious at the the time any way would have used them. As they were often all that was available but these would be more likely be a double barrelled weapon.
Shotguns could be used for internal security or police applications. They were also used by the Americans in the Pacific I think on the grounds that the Japanese had not signed up to the Geneva conventions.
The British used pump action and semi auto shotguns post war in Malaya as they claimed they were not to shoot people but to clear jungle foliage to give a clear field of view. I presume the terrorist hiding behind the bush removed by the buckshot was regarded as just being unlucky to be full of holes.

You can buy a wood effect stock&pump for an m3 shorty?

I've not seen this, though I'm not sure if this is what you meant...

Oh btw, anyone know if there will be accomodation at pheonix? Says on website accomodation is available for large events... but can't see anywhere if they are doing it for Arnhem...

can anyone offer any further info on the use of the winchester etc shotguns in the european theatre?

Trawled around the web through various boards and wiki articles and it doesnt specify anywhere they werent used in europe. just that they were used more in the pacific.

Always been half tempted by a TM one and have enough old air rifle stocks around to make a wood set for one so it looks the right era

As much as i want one, the only double barrel shotgun i've found is the 'mad max' sawn off, which, nice as it is, is way too expensive to be anything other than a toy. I'm toying with the idea on trying to manufacture one myself, as i've got an old stock knocking around somewhere.

Aaaaaand obviously, it'll be finished before the 1st october....

thanks mate that'd be great.

I was more thinking of basing it on the winchester pump action trench type models as the TM super 90 could be mod'd to it fairly easily I think. And wasnt thinking of it for wotan(though it would be a good gun for that) more for the future. As I already have something special planned for wotan weapon wise heh

Winchester isnt technically a conventional shotgun, but it is 1 non-the less, and theyve been around since the gun slinging days of the wild american west! :)

Shotguns were used in WW1, hence the name trench gun, the Marines used them in WW2 in the Pacific for clearing out Jap tunnels etc.

If you're going for a ww2 shotgun, there is a trench shotty available... but its very pricey (why i havent got 1 yet) Remington 870s are pretty similar in looks, maybe you could get 1 of those instead of the M3 Benelli

winchester seems to be the most bought ones by the us army and marines for ww2 which is why I picked them out. aye had seen the trench gun(based on the m1897 winchester) but was looking for a cheaper option myself hehe. the 870 is nice but only single shot and runs on little box mag things where as the tm fires 3 and runs on shells so more fun.

hrmm after looking at it, it should be perfectly possible to make one up either from the 870 or the super 90. the 870 would be easier but the 90 is more fun. either way gotta get my wotan project done first and some cash together for the shotgun first

thats fantastic thanks mate :)

been doing some more reading using more obscure search terms. seems side by sides were often used by resistance and home guard types. And the winchester pumps were used mainly in the pacific however some did make it to ETO. mainly they were used by MP's and people guarding things in general. however some(very very few) made it to the front lines where it seemed they were used to help clear hedgerows and for their psycological factor when assaulting certain positions.

they were also used by behind lines oss agents as they helped disorientate the enemy due to large noise etc

so seems they were used though sparingly. may just have to make one incase something urban comes up again heh

time to start a Rhys needs a shotgun fund.
