Just as a heads up, Fire support are showing Tanaka K98 mags in stock again. The bad news? They've gone up in price!

Just a tad.
I'm glad I bought mine when I did.
Just to add if anyone plans to buy sany of these and is going to Die Glocke then I can probably pick these up for you and save you the postage.
Yes, I thought a £7.41 rise was a bit steep.
Mind you, it's still cheaper than Wolf and ordering from abroad at the moment as well.

Actually I paid £12.40 less for mine. ![]()

Damn, I'm glad I have 7 from various supplies when it was the 'good ol' days'
.....So imagine the shock I got yesterday when I saw their latest batch at £530.40!!
I think this so called "credit crunch" has been a good excuse for some to try to rip us off (UK retailers always seem to change the "$" for a "£" when pricing their wares anyway). The unfortunate thing is, with not so good exchange rates at the moment, it's not really worth the while to order from HK now either. I got my K98 and a couple of mags from abroad and saved a load of money at the time but I couldn't do that now.

I need some advice on gas guys? My K98 doesn't seem to have any sort of restrictor I've seen mentionned elsewhere so I can't alter the amount of gas fired each shot. Now with green gas and .2g bbs it puts out 550fps on a moderately warm day which is too "hot" for use in games
, but around 430fps with 134a. Is Ultra gas between these in terms of power? Or is there anything else easily available which is - I'm aiming for 480-490fps ideally.
On a plus note, the hop setting seems the same for .36g bb's and green gas as it is for .3gbb's and 134a so its easy to swap between them!

And while we are at it, I have been using abbey ultra in my K98, but the mags are pissing gas. now if it was just one, I'd say blown seal. but its all 3 and the other 2 are new. Any ideas. ![]()

Sounds too much of a coincidence for them all to go? My 2 mags have been ok with everything I've thrown at them since I got the rifle a couple of months ago (not sure how old they are). I read somewhere that leaving your mags partly filled with gas prolongs the seal life but I've no evidence if its true or not?

Well, mine are leaking from the fill valve. Like I said, they are new, so not sure why they are leaking like this. At the moment I only have abbey ultra gas to try in them.

thank you good and kind sir. time to canabilise some old lighters and aquire some brake fluid.

Straffham, for your nozzle... the only thing I can suggest is a restricted nozzle. They pull out of the bolt face, so are relatively easy to change.
I know at one point there was such a thing as a restrictor kit, which comprised of a nozzle that was threaded inside. Then you had a number of threaded inserts that had varying bore sizes in them.
I've not seen them about for years though.
Yes see what you mean about the threaded nozzle, but as this isn't tied in with the gas release valve I can only assume it restricts the speed with which the gas is released, rather than the amount? But I'll give Abbey Ultra gas a try and see how that compares - cheers for the advice.

Cool!
I'll keep a look out for such a set then, or anything else that might fit the bill - thanks for explaining the whys and hows to me! I had actually tried mixing green gas with 134a (different to what you described I know,) but found it very hit and miss as I had no way of measuring the proportions of each . . .
Hopefully Abbey ultra will come in nearer 500fps than green gas; whatever its all good fun experimenting!

I got a Marushin scope mount and i didn't bother to fit it to my Tanaka..I didn't want to ruin the stock and the fact that its a bit offset made put me of..It just does´t look right..Still waiting for someone to repro a affordable highturet mount
(The marushin mount actully looks better on a MP44)

Thats because the Marushin mount is actually a copy a a G43 mount for the ZF4 and not a K98 side mount. Marushin didn't do their research properly! The G43 mount and the ZF4 scope were also used on the MP44.
I also wish someone would do a decently set of high turret mounts and a nice affordable repro ZF39 scope whilst they are at it!
“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."

"Comrades, Red Army men, commanders and political workers, men and women guerrillas! It is on your perseverance, staunchness, fighting skill and readiness to discharge your duty to the country that the defeat of the German-fascist army and the liberation of the Soviet land from the Hitlerite invaders depend! We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."

The restricted nozzle was a different way of adjusting the power, very similar to the PCS system (but restricted in a different place) of the M700 series.
The smaller bore in the nozzle does indeed reduce the speed of the gas release, but not the volume.....
But what it does do, is that with the slower release (because of the restriction), the BB exits the barrel before the rest of the released gas has time to expand and propel it. Thus having a lower FPS.
I knew I'd seen it on DenTrinity!... Just searched and here is a link, although its out of stock
Trust me on this one.... I spent a lot of time boring out nozzles and smoothing gas routes in order to obtain the best most consistent power possible.
Restrictors do work (admittedly they don't improve the gas comsumption at all.
I've been offered a "G" version bolt converter with restrictor fitted (brand new - similarish to that shown in the link above) so I'm going to play around and see how it goes -I'm hoping to run green gas/propane at a site friendly 480ish fps; though as said above gas is prone to fluctuations.

Yep,i Know. And had they done their research they would have made the railpart of the scope mount out of metal instead of plastic.
I drilled two small holes (easy to patch up if i want to) and stuck the mount on the right side of the reciver of my MP44 just to see how it looked and it was spot on..But pretty pointless since i dont have a scope that looks the part.. ![]()

Well, got the bolt convertor with restrictor fitted, its knocked the velocity down from 550ish to 370ish FPS with 0.2g BBs and green gas so a bit low now - unless I open the restrictor up a bit with a reamer perhaps? The actual bolt convertor head is identical to the one that was already fitted on my gun, though mine was missing the restrictor. It does seem to have improved the shot to shot consistency though which is no bad thing. I feel more tinkering coming on!!!

did your restrictor boldhead only come with 1 nozzle insert? It normally comes with 3 of different sizes
I got it from Sgt Heide to toy around with, came with the 1 insert but had very little if any use. My father has sets of taps and dies so might play around with some brass rod and a drill and make some more of various sizes when I have time. ![]()
