Ooh, this looks nice! Anyone got one, or heard if they're any good?

Yup, Ive got one. Lovely bit of kit to hang on the wall, but it falls down as a skirmish gun compared to Maruzen's P38. Here's the reasons why:

1: Cant insert a magazine without the gun being cocked
2: Hammer pin is weak.
3: Toggle lock design is intrinsically weak compared to the "conventional" design of the P38
4: The holsters are crap, and use a buckled strap design to close. It's a right pig to get into with any degree of haste

However, to dispel a myth, the recent ones do NOT leak gas from the magazine. The current mags are on their 4th design evolution, and Tanaka seem to have finally dealt with the leak problem.

However, my biggest problem with the P08 is this. I cant find where i put the bastard since coming back from First and Only

Thanks Kermit - most useful. I will be wanting a good pistol to skirmish with. I'm considering the P38, but also Tanaka do a Browning Hi Power - isn't that the one that Germany also issued to their soldiers, when they commandeered the FN factory in 1940?

I had a Hi power for a while as part of my Brit load out ( to upset all the 226 owners) . It was pants, the slide broke very quickly, the whole thing was not very robust . Had a few other tanakas so not a downer on the make , but I'd give the hi power a miss.

P38 seems the best of the german bunch , although I like my WA 1911s so use a captured commander from time to time, although again the TM version seems a better airsoft weapon .

Other than completing a load and being great toys, I've never been convinced by the usefullness of airsoft pistols in a skirmish , other than as a concealed weapon . "Lovely bit of kit to hang on the wall" sums up my feelings on them I'm afraid .

Thanks for the info, Oldsweat. Yeah, I know what you mean about pistols - it seems that 99% of pistol rounds get fired after combat has actually finished! That said, I have occasionally found it useful to leave my rifle and crawl through undergrowth with just a pistol, in order to get close enough to chuck a smoke or flash bang at the enemy.

And besides, I've just received one of Warren's nice leather holsters, so I need something to fill it!

I could do with a luger myself, Action Hobbys have one listed but it looks more like a walther P38 to me, as for quick draw it was comon practice to cut the flap of the holster for quick draw use in combat, anyone know a UK suplier of Air Soft Lugers?

Steve, I believe http://www.airsoftscotland.com do both the Luger and the P38. Given the opinions expressed here, I went for the P38 - it's awesome!

Can any knowledgeable person pronounce on the suitabilty of side arm by unit ?

Ie did SS units get more P38's that Heers , or did Fallschirmjagers always prefer 08s etc ? I'm aware a lot of MP44s found there way to elite units firts, but no idea about side arms . Prefer the looks of the Luger , but took on board Kermits and 9mm observations on it .

i have a luger and i absolutely love it to bits but after having owned it for about4 months the blowback stopped working - its the hammer spring.... so lesson: dont leave a mag in it beause you will have to leave it cked (if you like to leave some gas in the mag which i believe you should do.

I considered a p38 but the luger is much more of an icon.

In the beginning of the war the waffen ss were often issued with mausers, the luger was replaced by the p38 so i dont think there are any notable differences on a unit by unit basis. In actual fact it appears (from my reading anyway)as though the ss were the last to get the new improved weapons, as the army had first priority. I have seen pics of soldiers with both. The SS had plenty of camo though...

hi yes i managed to gret the blowback working... it seems it is mag related the place where the pin strikes is worn This due to the gun being bought 2nd hand after being sat in a box for a long time. I love it. It always creates a stir although for sheere fun I may get a mauser box cannon. Early in the war the SS did not get all the best weapons because of the rivalry with the army, but later when their fighting worth was realised they were issued with the good stuff first. The luger was very easy to point so seemed very accurate.

Just press the gas can down onto the magazine till liquified 134a comes spurting out. I've never tried to get as many shots out of a magazine as possible before refilling with gas (i just reload and regas at the same time) but given the small size of the Luger magazine, I would think it a struggle to get more than a magazine full of BB's down the barrel before running out of gas.

As John M says, lubrication of the seals is vital. You don't want them to shrink, or crack up!

One of 'em is a repro. The other three MOSCART powered. Basic construction is complete, however, i'm finding the finishing touches (paint, stencils, label) to be more of an arse to do correctly.

How'd you get on with the Luger? all working nicely I hope :D
