I posted up a link of blueprints a while ago, I'll see if i can dig them out again.

EDIT: Here's my copy of the blueprints. They're for an aircraft Vickers, but the general dimentions are exactly the same. Just compare the blueprints to a picture of an Infantry version to see what should and should not be there (ventaltion fins of jacket for example).

The Vickers I built is quite a simplistic one, due to avaliability of materials and tools. I constructed mine using everyday items found in B&Q/Wickes and built it with only a set of screwdrivers, electric hand drill, juniour hacksaw and a small jewlers vice. (I was lodging in an anex of a house 50miles away from my home and needed something to pass the time!)

Oh, I just realised, is it the Vickers 303 MMG you're wanting, or the Vickers K? Sorry, I just assumed.

Hehe, too true! Mine still ways a fare bit and the only metal in it is the internal framework and version 1 gearbox! What we need is a couple of universal carriers built up for each gun and team :D

I opted for the smooth jacket version with Mk2 flash hider, purely for the ease of reconstructing their design. Major's one is a converted "crinkle jacket" metal film prop', though i haven't seen photos of it yet, but would love too *hint hint* :)

EDIT: Which PGC gearbox do you have in mind? There from experimenting with both version 2 and 3 gearboxes, there isn't the space to fit one of these in with its pistol grip motor configuration. You've only got a max of 4" to play with, with the body/receiver and you've got the get it in-line with the low slung barrel of the Vickers. I've used a version 1 ('cos it was cheap and has a darn good ROF) and I think Majors useing an M14 gearbox.

There's pictures of us all manning Major's Vickers at the Training Day we had on Sunday... the pictures should be online later in the week.

Slightly off kilter on this thread , but did British forces still use Lexis guns in WWII other than for home defence ?
Thats one I'd love to build :D

Yep, I've seen early war pics of it in use and i *think* i've seen LRDG vehicles with them mounted (might have been a scale model though so might not be real).

Yes

I thought I'd seen them on LRDG jeeps as well, but had no idea if they had been scrounged from local sources or were general issue . I thought the Bren had replaced them in the post WWI era .

The Bren did replace them... but the British army was desperate and hence they continued to be used in some circumstances... not that common... but still used.

That'd be the Vickers K - they do look quite similar from a distance due to both using a top mounted circular magazine:

The way to spot a Lewis gun is that it looks like a super soaker... ;)

Aha - confusion sorted.

I do like the look of the Lewis gun , with the cooling barrel it looks scary ! M14 and some drainpipe !

no it actually has a grip...

More like AK and some drainpipe.

or even a tommy gun as the stock looks very similar to a tommy gun stock.

A good base gun for a airsoft Lewis, I've always thought, would be a G3 variant due to receiver and pistol grip looks.

Tim, Yes, PGC gearboxes are fantastically strong, so I've heard, but which one are you going for? PGC build many different types, not just one particular gearbox.
They've bought out an MP40 one! I wonder if anyone on this forum would be tempted to get one?

Nah i know the difference, i was on about a lewis gun on a chevrolet truck, proper LRDG early stuff before jeeps were available.

As an aside George Lucas uses Lewis Guns as 'concussion rifles' issued to the stromtroopers on tattoine while their other weapons are stirling SMGs and MG42 and 34!

(han solo has a broom handle mauser too!)

edit: this model

of this real steel:

My vickers is smooth jacket, sits on a real tripod, feed is through the bottom of the gun from a 249 box mag built into a wooden ammo box that I built.

Its heavy, but as it is ment to be in a fixed postion,

There are some pics of it coming soon as they were taken on sunday.
